Keyword domains / optimizing: Singular or Plural?

Hi there,

I wonder if anyone had the same question before

Let's say I'm optimizing a domain / site for a keyword.
Let's take "birthday gift".

would it be better to optimize for "birthday gifts" or "birthday gift" (no -s)?
"gift" is contained within "gifts", but not vice versa.. but will google "see" this?

Or do I need to optimize one page for
"birthday gift" and one for "birthday gifts" within my website?

It would be interesting how google works here.

Most times when you search Google keyword tool, you'll see that the plural has higher traffic.
