Keyword Research Question

Hey,
Just a quick question on keyword research.

What's more important, the number of pages competing, or the quality of the top 10. Cause the niche I'm looking at has 176,000 competing sites when I put the term in quotes, which I've heard is a lot; but mostly low PR's and only a few sites have above 100 links to the page.

Also, the site "webmd" is in the top two spots on Google, and I've heard that they're a juggernaut. Is that true?

Any help will be appreciated, Thanks.

Number of competing sites means nothing. It's the top 10 you should analyze

    Hey Ryan
The method you are using is not a good one. Putting a keyword within quotes and looking at the results is not a good way to measure the degree of difficulty of a niche.

Analyze the top 10 sites at length. That is a much better option. You have software tools that do it.

As for Webmd, it is an authority domain in the medical field, a dinosaur I would say. You would be in a David and Goliath situation

Hmmm.. So I should not choose this niche because of webmd and the fact that I won't be able to outrank them?

Market Samurai is very good for this. It will give you a good indication of the strength of the sites that are in the top ten. You can also check where their backlinks are from, domain age , page rank etc. I believe you can still get a two weeks trial. Also you can go to the MS dojo and watch the videos before you buy. These are very informative and well worth a watch even if you dont decide to purchase.

the number of post competitor is not a factor at all, look at the quality of the top pages. Do we have authority websites? How many? if you see more than 3 of them, leave that keyword alone. Authority websites can be pages with pr more than 5.
The quickest way to judge if a keyword is not competitive is to see if there are any forums ranking in the top 3 pages or if you see any other websites with the exact keyword ranking in the first or second page.
    hope this helps.
