Hey everyone,

I see a lot of threads asking all kinds of questions about social bookmarking. Here's some basic data which will hopefully help you with your research. No blah blah, just dry info.

Domain data:

Exact match domain, a few months old.

Google US search count data for the keyword:

Local broad match: 3,600
Local exact match: 1,900

Some simple competition data:

Google broad search: About 2,790,000 results
Google in quotes search: About 475,000 results
Google in title search results: About 8,610 results
Google in URL search results: About 4,170 results

Background info:

Obviously not the most competitive keyword out there, but I see people struggling to rank for stuff with much less competition. Do not over-complicate this stuff - that's the key.

Social bookmarking data:

80 manual social bookmarks. All targeting the same keyword/URL. No RSS or pinging of bookmarks. Clean accounts on all social bookmarking websites - no spammy accounts. All do-follow ( can be mixed - not required).

All social websites with PR of 3+ (homepage).

Rankings data:

Before SB: #27-#24
Two days after SB: #7

*see graph*

There you go. No fancy techniques, no complicated strategies, no need to buy anything (unless you're outsourcing this).

I have replicated this exact process hundreds of times. Mostly for front page keywords (not inner pages) - but that's not a requirement in any way.

More competitive keywords will require more work, but SBs are always a good start.

Thanks for this example. Do you have the same set of accounts that you use on the SB sites, or do you create new ones for each new site?

    Hi,

Its big thing to tell why the SB not add that same url again. we have to sign up again in that same site in different url.

Great data to share, thank you for that!

What do you think about onlywire and it's social sites. Do you use most of them as well?
I'm trying to do the same but in more automated way. There is plug-in for wordpress that auto submits every post (inner page links, i love them) to the onlywire's services. But haven't measured or isolated the data so can't tell if it helped.

Do you want to share your list as well?

      You're welcome.

What do you think about onlywire and it's social sites. Do you use most of them as well?
Yup, I use some/most of them. Onlywire is an okay service... haven't used it in ages but from what I remember it's a bit of a pain to use.

Do you want to share your list as well?
Nope. But if you have a look at onlywire and similar service providers you should be able to build your own list in no time.

      You could say that.

I noticed a lot of people saying "my website doesn't rank", "social bookmarking is crap", "SB or directory sbmissions?", etc... So there - this works, I gave you exact numbers and a how to.

It's not rocket science. See how your keyword compares in terms of competition, get yourself a list of good SB websites (or outsource) and get **** done. Simple as that.

Thats a fantastic analysis. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

I am doing the same for few of my sites. I could see the boost in the SERP. But the key here is identifying the right bookmarking site I guess.

You said the bookmarks are getting indexed soon, are you using digg as well?
My digg bookmarks are not indexed right from november.

        Thank you

Nope, digg isn't on my current list of websites. But I'm sure it doesn't matter what social sites you use, as long as they are decent websites. My bookmarks definitely get noticed, but as for indexed - they don't all stay indexed for a long time, which is fine.

My experience is that, depending on the competition levels, SBs give me a good initial boost and then the site starts to fall off again (slowly). That's when I start building other backlinks to maintain my rankings and later on push the site to one of the top three spots.

The point here, mostly, is getting things done.

Yes. I used to alternate between 2-3 different email addresses, but found out it wasn't necessary.

Same here - always see a short term boost in traffic. Sometimes even sales, depending on a niche.

And yes, it is boring. But so are most other backlink building techniques - boring. And time consuming.

I wrote the bot myself. It completely replicates what I used to do when creating these backlinks manually, using nearly the same list. It doesn't break CAPTCHA for registrations though - I do those myself. I have a 100% success rate, unless a SB site is down/not responding.

I don't think there are any commercial bots/software tools that can do such a thing. You could use form auto-fill tools to speed things up, but it'll be a hassle at first.

Most of the time I outsource to someone I've been working with for ages now, but if money is a problem - manual bookmarking ftw. It also helps to know/understand the process and is a good skill to master in case you decide to offer a similar service later on (semi-automated I can do 100 SBs in an hour and 100 accounts in around 2 hours - but accounts can be reused).

I think I remember you from the XFactor forums (if I'm not mistaken).

I don't do SB at all. At most, 1 digg and that's it. It's an interesting case study you put up here.

But are you saying software like Bookmarking Demon (BMD) are not worth it? I want to know your opinion on this. Have you tried using BMD yourself?

What about BMD vs Quality Outsourced SB?

Good info. Sounds like your bot is more 'semi-automated' - which, in my experience (not just with SBs, but with article submissions and more) has been the best overall mix of time-saving and success/stick rate.

A lot of people rave about OnlyWire, and personally (I used the free version), I thought it sucked. Kept having submissions denied, or delayed, and even accounts shutdown...and this was right after I started using it!

I have used socialmarker and socialmarking (both of which are more semi-automated - still requires you to fill out captchas, click 'submit', etc) and have had much more success with them, and they just don't take that much time.

And good point about using SBing at first, then doing other backlink building once ranking begins to fall off...too many think that they can just submit a few SB backlinks and PRESTO, they're supposed to be on the first page forever. (Usually these folks are just misinformed, but it's still detrimental to their success.)

There is always a quick surge in traffic and rankings with social. The long term is the problem. Possibly rotating new accounts, will be time consuming but could potential keep the surge flowing.

No need to do that. Build SBs, get as high up in rankings as you can, then once your rankings start to drop off - start building other backlinks. Simple SEO 101 logic. Works every time.

Nothing can guarantee long term rankings. Observe and adjust as needed.

Now if someone wants to chat and share test data for where to go from here - once the initial rankings boost starts to wear off - I'm all ears. I have my own data for the next step - but I'm always learning and happy to hear what other people have to say.

EDIT - wanted to add this here -

There's another part to this case study - how I get to positions #1-#3 after SBs start to wear off. Will be posted in around ten days as a follow-up. With charts/diagrams and all that stuff.

Lemme help Bay37 out a bit, he's been very helpful to me .

Social bookmarking sites are made so you can keep tabs on your favorite sites, or for you to share with the social bookmarking community such as Digg, Stumbleupon, Buddymarks, etc. There are tons.

"Manual" means because he didn't use fully automated software to create them. Seems like his semi-auto bot replicates the manual process 1 site at a time though.. 100 in 1 hour.. sounds about right.

All you have to do is sign up for an account on the site, confirm your email, then add your URL to bookmark.

It should be a "submit link" or "submit article" depending on the site. Just put your targeted keyword in the "title" (so it creates an anchor text with this word on the bookmark page) and the target URL in the "URL" field. Add the keyword as a tag, and any related ones you want as well so it's a bit more natural.

They are all do-follow because the sites he chose allows for outbound links to be do-follow.

If it's a bookmark site really geared towards sharing with their community yours may not get on or stay on the front page or whatever if it's not HOT enough. However it should remain as a page itself unless it gets deleted. These sites are usually more discriminating against SPAM links since its more user centric. These are good for getting your stuff to go "viral" if your content is made for it.. otherwise you can still get a link that stays.

Other sites that let you bookmark just to keep track of your favorite sites... less people really care what you bookmark. It also never "disappears" unless you get nabbed for spam.

^ a total of 80 bookmarking websites. One bookmark per social website.

I have a bunch of accounts that I re-use as needed. Try to keep them "clean" - don't spam them, don't ever bookmark the same URL twice (on the same social site). Don't post too many bookmarks too often.

EDIT - more info -- I use one email address, but different usernames (if any). Rotate 1-3 keywords per URL.

Not much magic there really. Do work, acquire rankings, get paid.

Absolutely. Good service providers normally charge $10 to $20 for 100 or so quality bookmarks. A bargain.

I have purchased the Ping.FM and created my own Pixel-Pipe account. Jason here on the WF has a WSO to do this for you so you can save some time.

I created the Pixel-Pipe account by hand to see how much work is involved and to get a closer look at the inner working of the process.

        SocialAdr handles 18 SB sites

        Ping.FM handles 30 sites

Pixel-Pipe Handles 90 sites but the good thing about Pixel-Pipe is that you can add your own WordPress or Joomla sites and have Pixel-Pipe post to all of them as well.

I am trying an experiment with some teens here. I made a deal to give them their own community using Dolphin if they would do some bookmarking for me. If they don't bookmark, I turn off their account in the community.

If you have talent, a hosting account and some time, barter for the services you need. The local Senior Center wants some online training and have reach out to some of the IT types in town. Maybe they will be willing to trade some training time for bookmarking time.

Train them how bookmarking works and have them use your project as there final grade assignment.

For those that are not programmers but like to tinker, check out Macro Express. Some may think this is the hard way and in some cases it may be but you could write a screen macro to handle anything on any SB site except for the capcha.

The bottom line is that this is work and work takes time. You would not want to buy a dinner that took 2 minutes to cook, you would want the food to be properly cooked, seasoned and prepared by the time you eat it right?

Thanks to lukasparov for your list. I am going to assign one of the teens to create a Pixel-Pipe account using all of those SB sites I don't already have working for me.

Check Out Jason's WSO (I make nothing but a friend) and see if this can cut down some of the grunt work.

I will let you know if working with teens on the barter deal is worth it and if the seniors take the bait and trade training for bookmarking my money sites.
