Domain Choice: MyKeywordPlusOtherWords.com or MyKeyword.net/.org?

Hi

I did pose this question on the Main board, but I think this is a more appropriate section, seeing as this is the SEO forum.

Apologies for the repeat.

So, this question comes from the fact that that a domain I want has been taken.

So, if mydesiredkeyword.com has been taken, which of the following would you go for:

- mydesiredkeyword.net

- mydesiredkeyword.org

- my-desired-keyword.com

- mydesiredkeywordplusotherwords.com

- otherwordsplusmydesiredkeyword.com

Additionally, what relative value of searches would warrant mydesiredkeyword.co.uk?

By that I mean, say, a term gets 3,000 global searches and 600 UK local (UK) searches (a factor of 5), and if I'm more likely to get a better ranking with a .co.uk domain, even though it is only for UK-based (and thus, fewer) searches, would you go after that, rather than trying to rank higher on the global searches?

In other words, what 'factor' (i.e, that which was 5 in the example above) would you deem to be good enough for me to opt for the UK listing, rather than fight for a global listing. (Big fish, small pond, etc).

Also, what do you think is a visitor's perception of a non-.com domain?

Do you think it is worth, say, going for a less Google-friendly (but still well-ranked) .com domain, instead of a more Google-friendly (but less visitor-friendly) .net domain?

This is the order of importance (from my experience)

    mydesiredkeyword.com
    mydesiredkeyword.net OR mydesiredkeyword.org
    mydesiredkeywordplusotherwords.com
    otherwordsplusmydesiredkeyword.com
    my-desired-keyword.com

From my experience, only .com's are useful for exact match keywords. (and Matt Cutt's said it is something they are looking at giving even less authority to)

I guess you didn't try to hard to rank any other domain extensions then. I like .net's and .org's to be honest with you.

.net .org .com all rank very easily IMO and from my experience.

Matt Cutt's is full of it.

I agree with you on Matt Cutt's. (or Google in general)

I have never had any lucks on the other domain extensions. SEOmoz did a pretty in-depth correlation analysis that determined only .com was relevant for exact match.

I agree with faceblogger about the order. I wouldn't worry much about the .net domain, you can still rank well and get good traffic with a .net domain. Remember content is king, as long as the info is good the viewer won't care what the domain name is.

As far as the UK listing vs global listing, it would depend upon the product and the competition. Is there less competition in the UK market for the keyword or product? The competition and the need for the product or service in that area would be my deciding factors.

Actually. It doesn't matter. You can rank for search terms that aren't in your domain ANYWHERE as long as your On- and Off-Site SEO is spot on... Which should be either way.

      mydesiredkeyword.net . com .org
      my-desired-keyword.com . net .org
      mydesiredkeyword.com/plus-other-words
      otherwordsplus.mydesiredkeyword.com

      You've got options.

      CHEERS!

      An example:

If the UK search volume was 5,000 and the global search volume was 10,000, (only a factor of 2), this would mean that the UK demand was greater (relatively speaking), and thus, it would be worthwhile aiming for a high UK ranking (eg with a .co.uk domain).

However, if the UK search volume was 1,000, compared to a global search volume of 10,000 (a factor of 10), this would mean that, perhaps, I'd be better off going for a .net domain and trying to fight for a not-so-high-but-high-enough global ranking. (The argument being 10% [potential global visits from Google ranking] of 10,000 [global searches] is better than 50% (potential UK visits] of 1,000 [UK searches]).

So, in that scenario, I posed two extremes: a factor of 2, and a factor of 5. But what would you deem the cut-off point at which it would be better to go for UK ranking and UK traffic?

I have nothing of value to add here. But we can't let a signature go to waste now, can we?

Just a quick thanks to all who responded to this post. I am a newbie here too, I know nothing about SEO, and I had this exact same question. It does make sense to search before simply starting a new thread, it avoids duplicity.
