Problem With Equal Optimization of Two Pages

Hi!

I am trying to rank for a certain keyphrase however in Google Results, I get 2 different pages ranking for that keywphrase. One of them is the page and one of them is an inner page. The thing is that both the home page and the inner page are equally optimized for the keyword. Equal in everything, except that the inner page my keyword is the same as the home page one + one more word. But google is getting confused on which page to display due to equal optimization, or so I think. Is there a way for me to change this so my home page displays for this keyword and my inner page stops displaying for that keyword. I think this has also affected my rankings as it has been swithcing the pages a lot lately and I've moved down from #1 in google to abot #5 the last couple of days. Any help is appreciated in this matter.

Thank you,
Oscar

  • Which page has more backlinks, the home page or inner page?
  • Both have an approximate equal amount of backlinks. Each of them with their respective keyword. Home page with "keyphrase" and innerpage with "keyphrase + additional word".

    • Hey sleaklight,
If you have two pages from your site on the first page of SERPS, it means Google is finding both pages relevant for that keyword phrase. So you are getting 20% of the prime real estate on page 1 of Google. Good work. I would be delighted with a result like that

  • No no no no. I was getting 2 listings, now it is down to 1 listing, but it is showing home page to some searches and inner page to other searchers.

    • Sorry I did not quite comprehend what you were saying. If it has gone down to one listing, it means Google has found a new site more relevant than your site's previous second listing and replaced it with the new one.

Generally a double result for a site is the home page result followed by an indented inner page result.

The aim of Google is to serve users with the most relevant results.

  • Yes but that one listing is showing my home page sometimes and my inner page at other times. It has not settled down on which page to display for good.

    • It should settle down over time. Even if only one listing is displayed, it means Google finds that page most relevant to the search query in question.
