My blog is now 4th place on Google for the 2-word keyphrase I'm optimizing it for. I've beaten all the other sites, now all I have to do is beat the big boys. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place are: 1) an article on Ezine Articles, 2) a page on Wikipedia, 3) a book on Amazon.

I think these pages are beating me not because of page authority as much as because of site authority. So, how do I beat the big boy sites with a lot of authority and outrank them?

    Hey,

Those are not really big boys and you will find it a lot easier to outrank them than you think. As you seem to know, those pages get their rankings from internal links, which is good, but not as powerful as external backlinks.

The answer is simple: backlinks, backlinks, backlinks. Just keep at it.

Just keep building your backlinks like Jack said above and it will happen. I have a site in the #3 spot for my keywords and I have lost focus and moved onto another project or site. This happens all too often to me. I get so close but then never finish. I am working on fixing that... but my recommendation to you is if you really want it stay focused on building links daily to your site.

Those are some of the easiest sites to beat as they don't generally backlink to the pages..

I would actually be wary of a term that those 3 ranked for as either

    a) there not much traffic

    b) there is traffic but not much money to be made

    c) you are a genius for finding that niche..

    I hope it's c!

      Lol, I hope it's c as well.

There are quite a few ads showing up on Google on the right side when I do the search for that keyphrase, so I assume it has some money making potential.

Yes, those should be easy to beat, but on rare occasions I have seen pages on these sites that have a ton of backlinks. Do yours have any? If not it's just a matter of backlinks and time.

But, if you are in the #4 slot you should be having a good idea of traffic potential and earnings. Of course you will get a ton more traffic once you get to #1 but if you aren't getting traffic or making money now then you might want to evaluate if you want to spend the time to get to #1.
