I was wondering the same thing around Christmas time and checked the Amazon discussion boards. Here was one of the responses there:
"the orange boxes get served up as a default when the system can't process a request for various bits of content within a certain time period. If you're linking to images on that Amazon server, I think that's less of a load on the server." They went on to say they host their own images so don't have that issue.
