Guys

Should have asked this ages ago really, tsk

W/regard to bamcklinking, some of teh links I get to my site are to the
xyz.com

...and some to

xyz.com

1. I assume that this splits your backlinking profile to the site owners disadvantage

2. How do you avoid/ minimise this issue?

Much much appreciated
Thanks
Ed

Well you should only build back links to one. To get some of that link juice applied to the other, I recommend setting up a 301 redirect through htaccess. You can google it for more in depth instructions, but that is what you will need to do!

      Thanks iamnameless...

Issue is rather for when people backlink to me rather than when I do the linking. I'll investigate 301s though

    1. make backlinks to only one - either www or non-www
    2. use 301 redirect for other domain

Typically, people choose www for backlinking and redirect non-www to www.

Pick one and stick to it. I use the xyz.com on all of mine. Doesn't make a difference but just stick to one.

Sticking to one is the best idea, but I would suggest making sure it's the version that google has INDEXED.

    In google, type in site:yourdomainnamehere.com

and see which version of your page it has indexed, the ht+p://www or the http://

That way, there will be no descrepencies as to which one you should be building it to.

They ARE looked at differently by Google. Check out this article for more info (By Matt Cutts):

    SEO advice: url canonicalization

There was actually a couple of instances where I accidentally got both the www and the http:// versions indexed one on of my sites. It was a little weird because google had two versions of my site indexed. Instead of having 60 urls indexed, there were actually 120 indexed, two of the same page where one was the www. version and the other was the http://
