It is always going to be a game between us and Google, it might be backlinks today but could well be some other factor entirely when the next Google algorithm change occurs. That said I think they will hold their importance for some while to come

Yeah, we'll always be on top. It might take time but we will.

An algorithm will never replace human intelligence. Eventually search will be between friends, rather than search engines.

I see how backlinks could work in a perfect world, but quite honestly, its being abused, and I think it will at some point, either be ammended or abolished completely.

I dont think it will be possible for backlinks to become less importnat at the moment. More thought may go into how important backlinks form certain sites are.

Will backlinks become less important? They will remain important unless Google gets so smart it doesn't need to depend on them. When that happens, they will no longer be important. I don't see it happening anytime soon...

I have to totally agree with you there Diane. Backlinking will remain an essential part of off page seo for some considerable time to come. Which is great news for us!

The problem is it's hard to come up with something to replace backlinks in Google's algorithm. But if they come up with something better, they would probably replace backlinks in a heartbeat with something that is a little harder to cheat. (Though surely plenty of people would cheat the new method too, it would at least take a little longer )

You'll notice the importance google is placing on social sites at the moment. I'm sure that will increase in the future -- that is if anyone ever leaves their facebook page

The question is what will happen in 5 years (or even 10...). The internet will be exploded with sites and articles, I think some major change to the internet will probably be at some point.
It just seems that at some point, there'll be trillions of sites... It'll be too much.
Something in the way the internet is I think will change.

To me this is impossible. Google will not make that for sure..., but they can change something, so only the quality backlinks will count, not the spam ones.( again,I think this woun't happen soon)

I don't think that links will become less important. Without links, you take the "net" out of Internet.

I do believe certain types of links will lose their importance...

Certain types of links will not be counted as 'votes of confidence', they'll just be links. Which, if you take the SEO out of the equation, is what they should have been all along.

Take profile links, for example. Why would someone not trying to game the search results put a link in their profile? So interested people could check the profile and follow the link, right? How does ignoring that link when calculating search ranking for the target site compromise the purpose of that link?

      Short answer, it doesn't.

Once that nonsense is weeded out, it's going to make certain types of links even more important.

      Here's a clue...

The important links won't be in the resource box attached to a piece of gibberish on an article directory that even the owner hasn't seen since it was set up...

That makes perfect sense to me. I can see link exchanges becoming more significant again.

No, there's no way that links will be less important. If you've watched Google through the years, all they've done is redefine what is considered a good link. As time goes on, they just try and weed out the garbage.

I do wonder at what point (if they haven't already), they will start to monitor visitor behavior via the toolbar. So a site with a high bounce rate will potentially send a signal that page maybe shouldn't be so high. But not sure how that would work.

I think backlinks will always carry some value but when search get even better at ranking sites they will devalue some types of link.

Agreed. I think social media will play a large role in Google's algorithm in the future. Think facebook's share or like button. Have you ever noticed how really good websites with great info get more "likes" than, say autoblogs. I think this strategy will somehow be more interwoven into Google's future ranking system.

I heard facebook is focusing about an inbuilt search engine. So they will use a popularity technique as you said.

Backlinks won't really be obselete in the near future. Remeber when you could just stuff you webpage with your keyword, and your site will get on page 1? Keyword is still important nowadays, but in a different way. That is what's going to happen with backlinks.

Activities on your site is going to be another factor in getting ranked. This has been confirmed by Google.

When the idea that backlinks were the prime way of determining relevance for any given website the internet was a different landscape than it is today.

With the advent of social media and the way people interact with the web on such sites as Twitter, et al, backlinks have lost some of their luster as a way of determining the what/where/why of how people surf the net.

As the saying goes...'This is not your father's internet.'

A 'one size fits all' method of determining relevance for any given search is too much of a "when you have a hammer everything looks like a nail" approach.

A person searching for relief from an ingrown toenail has different needs than a person looking to find the hottest new fashions in shoes. They both relate to the foot, but the voices on the internet talking about those subjects differ wildly. So do the conversations.

Prior to social media becoming the 800 pound gorilla in the room using backlinks as a way to listen in on those conversations seemed logical due to the nature of one website pointing to interesting relevant content on a another site. Gaming the system has all but rendered that way of choosing relevance obsolete.

What search engines need is a better way to find the conversation streams and tap into them. What worked in 1998 when Google started out is not working today in spite of what they want to tell you. The internet is growing too fast, the conversations are going on at a much faster pace, and people are interacting on the web in ways they didn't or couldn't when Google first started out.

The bottom line may be this...if you have been relying on spamming backlinks as a way to game your site to a top ranking you better not take any long term loans out based on that income, imho. The footprint you leave may one day be your undoing.

Once it becomes obvious that no conversations are flowing through your website in spite of your massive backlinks it will be Game Over.

And believe it or not, that's a good thing for the web as a whole.

      ~Bill

I think backlinks as we know them today are on the way out eventually, not any time soon of course, but as google and the top 2-3 SE's increase their analytical analysis and database, it seems awfully easy for them to qualify backlinks and emphasis in many ways more appropriate to user intent and quality, such as avg time spent, interaction, and consumer interest.

No, not really. Until the day comes that google drops their obsession with authority and are capable of ranking their serps based purely on relevancy of content, there will always be some form of backlinking to "exploit".
