What is HashTag in Twitter? Can be helpful?

I see some on twitter put a pound sign key. I wonder if that's helpful or not?

Does anyone knows what's this all about?

Thanks in advanced!

The Hash Tag is more like a subject identifier. Most power twitter users are using various third part applications such as Tweetdeck. When people are monitoring the twitter chatter or tweets, they will have a defined search field of subjects or hashtags they want to read. Therefore it is easier to give a direct or targeted response to the tweeter. Hashtags, in essence, allow you to follow and monitor the conversation going on about specific subjects. That has been my experience.

The way it can be helpful is this. Many sites will have a widget that
automatically gets all tweets with certain hashtags. If you find
one, and your site is near the same niche, put that hashtag in
your tweets and it will be posted there at the same time you tweet.
May be good for some passing traffic. Also, depending on the
news, certain hastags will be followed by others, including sites
that pull in tweets. Right now egypt is hot. Do a tweet, put
#egypt on the end if it fits, and your tweet will show for people
      following those tweets.

It's not the end all, and it can be cumbersome and spammy looking,
especially if you tack a dozen on the end as I have seen some do.

It does not really effect people searching for your tweets if the
word is in your tweet and not in the hashtag.

I've found that when I want to get specific attention, hashtags do the trick. For clients I have done posts with a coupon (#coupon) that got picked up by at least 30 or 40 twitter users who just do coupons and savings; for my company, when I post SEO successes (which we publicize to prove our worth!) I'll tweet something like, "Just got a client at no. 1 spot on 2 keywords and rising on 4 more. #SEO."

It helps to get readers that are looking for what you've got to say. There is so much NOISE on twitter, that there has to be a way to direct it, sort through it, help people find you and help you find your audience.

you can read more at hastag.org or search for hashtags and read about.
