Is submitting your site to a directory outdated?

I've come across a lot of sources who say one method to build links its to submit your site to a paid or free directory.

But, in reality, does anyone actually consult a directory to find relevant sites?

Anyone noticed improved rankings by submitting their URL to directories?

"But, in reality, does anyone actually consult a directory to find relevant sites?"

No, not any more. I do see some click-throughs on directory listings (in the better, paid directories), but not enough to matter.

"Anyone noticed improved rankings by submitting their URL to directories?"

Yes. I have seen sites rank well with nothing more than decent title, meta tags and a few good directory listings.

Most directories out there are a waste of time. If you want a list of good directories, there are many lists out there. I would suggest a simple search for "web directory" and just look at sites in the first few pages.

I don't believe that anyone really uses these anymore! I do, however, post my information to the free directories because you never know: a lead could be generated that way. I use my money on other forms of advertising and marketing though!

    Good Luck in your endeavors!

For what though? If you want to rank for a keyword on an inner page and put your main domain in the directory - is this really helping your inner pages? Or is it giving some link juice to the inner pages via the main domain even if you don't use the keywords?

It’s still helpful. In fact, many sites these days are able to reach the top search results using this approach.

How about domain names and how they rank. I'm using .info because it was less expensive.. will they rank well in the search engines?

There are various software programs that will auto-submit you to directories. Does it help? I can't say for sure, but there are programs that can submit you to a thousand places very quickly. So why not...? I wouldn't bother trying to do it by hand, unless you're submitting to the Big Two: Yahoo directories (which costs around $299 a year but supposedly helps), and DMOZ (which I still can't seem to get into!!)

not actually outdated. It is still useful these days especially if your combines it with other SEO methods like article writing, blog commenting, forum participation, and link building strategies.

It is not outdated. The trouble is the number of useful directories are seriously outweighed by the junk. You could spend ages submitting them only for no traffic or even indexing by Google.

Directory submissions are the only self-made links approved by Google. Says so in the Google Webmaster guidelines. Why would we not use the only method actually approved by Google? And yes, these links help your rankings.

Directory submission is a important part of SEO (Not sure if I can see any improvement of this), but always keeping it mind specially for paid directories it not look like link farming.

I have found that almost all free directories are garbage. There are some exceptions. If you want to avoid link farms, pay for a site review at some of the better directories like Romow.com or BOTW.

It's still useful. But do remember, the directory must be theme related to your site, and it shouldn' t be punished by Google, or a pure link farm.
If you don't follow what I told you, you could get your site deranked.
