I don't have a lot of money and I really want to get some good rankings for my site. Can I realistically expect to get some decent rankings without hiring a professional SEO to do it for me?

you can if and only if you do 2 things

    1) learn HOW it's done
    2) do what your learn

if you can ride a bike you do do SEO but like anything you either buy trainings on it or pay someone to teach you.

If you have no money stick around here in the WF or go on google and absorb what you can and take good notes.

Worst thing you can do is forget why you want high rankings and start ranking for keywords that mean nothing buy junk on lookers.

If you know or understand what you are doing then you can easily do all the work yourself. It can be a bit tedious and boring at times, but if you can not afford to outsource then that is the way to go. Read the forums here and learn all you can. Install some plugins to help out. It is really easy when you start doing it.

I have never hired a "professional" SEO, but i employed freelancers from forums, fiverr etc. to help with link building. It's just too much to do everything.

You don't have to hire an SEO professional to learn from one. There are a lot of resources across the web and here at the Warrior Forum that will give you great advice about what to do.

You can also pay an SEO consultant to take a quick look at your website in a month or two. They will let you know how you are doing and what you can do to improve your site. You will still learn a lot from them, while not paying a full "package fee".

Well - you could hire me...

but I would take the time to learn SEO and really do it yourself. If you have any questions - we're here to help at all times.

    Hey Jason,

you have two options, do it yourself or have somebody doing it
for you. Doing it yourself is great when you want learn the rules
of the game yourself, maybe teach others later how to do it,
save money, and also offer your own services in the future.
But it takes a lot of time, and can be nerve killing.

Outsourcing is great if you want to get faster results, and are
willing to invest a little bit of money. You don´t absolutely
requires heavy amounts of money, just a bit will do.
What kind of SEO help are you thinking about?

do good keyword research to start, make sure your site is well structured and themed, write original content, build relevant links. Links that drive traffic, real blog comments, articles with snappy titles and content that builds interest but don't fully satisfy the curiosity created. Post in forums. Do guest blogging - my stats show me this rocks - Forum message - My Blog Guest get hooked up here. and yea it takes time, especially if you are working for quality and plan to be in business a while.

You can go both roads, but once you have your hands full
with higher money producing tasks you probably want to have
somebody who can work for you. Leveraging your time
and not doing everything by yourself is essential for
building wealth. That´s what most people call: "working smart"
