I used to use the old adwords tool by Google... until they "updated" it.
I have not needed to do any keyword research for a long time and am confused as to what might be the best now... what do you say?
What is the best tool and why.

It's still Google adwords keyword tool. You can use a fancy app like Market Samurai, but guess where they get their results :-)
Same thing with Micro Niche Finder.

I was just about to say the same exact thing. I still use the good old google tool but you could always opt for Market Samurai. I know I'm not providing much value by repeating what the guy above me is saying but he's right! Listen to him! He knows what he's talking about!! Good luck.

if Market Samurai just use google results could they not be working the results in a format better to use? I know of lots of ways to use data better than what original owners of this data use it

Market Samuria does 9 other things besides keyword
research. Most of us start with Google keyword tool.

We take that and import it into Market Samurai and
      then we start our research.

I would highly recommend Market Samurai for your first choice.

It has so many options it's the best.

    Second is Traffic Travis Pro

Has many great options too and makes keyword research very easy.
I own this one because it came free with a product I bought.

As for Micro Niche Finder, don't waste your time on that garbage.
I got a refund for that so fast. It was horrible, especially after
    using the first two.

I think Google Adword is still the best. For it has the most accurate results for the keywords you're looking for. WordTracker is also a good one.

Here's the thing - when you see variances between the Adwords tool, Traffic Travis, or Market Samurai (I've only used the beta/free versions of the last two, but I have seen differences between all three) - who is to say which (any?) of them are "correct"? Which one has the most accurate info?

    Who knows. LOL

There are plenty of people who have just used the Adwords tool, so you could just do that. The big benefit (IMO) of things like MS or TT is that it's multiple tools in one. You can go from doing search analysis to competition analysis to PPC analysis to etc all with one click of a button.

TT even has a cool little thing when you do competition analysis that just flat out gives you a "relatively easy" or "medium difficulty" or whatever kinda rating for how hard it will be to rank for that KW.

If you don't mind using multiple tools in your research, you can get everything you need from free stuff.

    Hi,

Some of our favourite tools include:

Keyword discovery - It costs some money but worth it. This analyses all the past 12 months’ worth of search data from all the major engines. It gives a good look at what is popular with searchers over the long term. You can get an in-depth look at where seasonal trends lie and provides suggestions as to how many times phrases are likely to be searched daily, based on past history data.

Google ad words tools - Queries volume for any given phrase offers insight based on the advertising platforms their search engines use. Data is pulled directly from their own systems which tracks every interaction they have with users. This data is pulled from the system that deals with paid advertising. This means the data is unreliable towards people whose purpose was more purchased orientated as opposed to research orientated.

Word Tracker - This is also a good tool. It allows you to create projects where you can catalogue your research. You can also export the data. It only looks back over the past 30 days though at least when we last used it.

We started our site using the free tools. You can too and as your revue grows, purchase a paid tool to dig deeper and continue your growth for your business.

It appears Keyword Discovery must be the best for SEO while Market Samurai is very good for PPC ?
