Yes. I just created some today. I think it's a good think to vary your backlinks, but make sure you're not spamming.

You surely get a G penalty after some time.
and yes its sort of spamming to the higher side as countless users are exploiting the same source until the owner of the site is frustrated and closes the system :p

For someone promoting an SEO service you are sure spouting some BS there. How can any type of backlink possibly get you a penalty? Unless Google is completely demented, there is simply no way that is true. If so, that would mean anyone could give profile backlinks to a competitor to wipe them off the SERPs. This obviously isn't going to happen.

I'm using profile backlinks and getting some serious results. I'm not saying it will always be a way to get link juice (and it probably won't) but for now it seems to work great.

There is no truth to this whatsoever.

Some people seem to think Google is like the mythological Greek Gods... just sitting around scheming ways to torment us.

There is a system you can follow that will help keep your profile backlinks stable and get you the ranking you need. In fact, if you follow simple principles of not spamming around in the content, you see the admins and others contribute the signature links, and you aren't just showing up to link, then the backlink stays and you aren't worried about any down fall with backlinks. Just keep your nose clean in everything you do. Don't go around doing spam like most people do when buying backlinks packages.

Profile links are still a solid tool. You just have to build them correctly and not spam the forums. If you do, your IP could get blacklisted and your profiles will be deleted, which means that you ended up just wasting your time....

The biggest benefits of profile links is the ability to do deep-linking to your internal pages.

I like profile links myself but like everyone is saying it is just a tool ( one of many ) you should pull out of your backlinking tool chest. Remember sometimes less is more and don't forget about link diversity. Take your time and build good profile links over time and they can be a great help for your site.

Yes, especially if you farther optimize your profile pages (like building solid links pointing to them). The best thing about profiles is that it can't be replicated by your competitors
