Niche site: From page 1 to ?!?

I have a niche site that made it to page 1 primarily on profile links, now its buried so deep I've given up looking for it.

It's also getting content posted to it from Seolinkvine.

Has it dropped because of the profile links being devalued, because of duplicate content, or both?

I just subscribed last month to backlinksblackbelt and have been working the packet by hand. It fits my budget, but now I'm wondering if it's a waste of time and money.

Does anyone have any suggestions for inexpensive backlinking solutions. I have the time to work on it but not much money to invest.

I haven't done anything since it went up rank and then back down.

    Problem keyword: profile links

Now you need like 5 times more of QUALITY links to get back to your old position....I have always preached that profile links are a pure spam alert and not only that will not do any good to your site, but will harm it. Now you need to balance back your link profiles (not with more profile links, but with more quality links) to get some sort of ... "quality" signals to the big G.

I'm starting to worry that I've missed the internet marketing boat. I thought that I could jump into this with only a little money and a lot of hard work, but the MMO I got that impression from was created in 2008.

I feel no different in the 3 year span of time. If your niche site is new then I think you should keep building links because new sites sometimes appear in search engines high, go back and then start ranking again.

People on backlinksforum are telling me to shut up and get back to work too, so that's what I'll do.

      Thanks everybody.

It could be a number of things. First of all, I would recommend that you track your site with a tool like Market samurai. That way you don't have to spend 20 minutes manually searching for your site in Google. Plus, I think that rank tracker is in the free version of MS.

Second, about why you have lost your first page ranking...
-A lot of times, when you backlink a website, Google will drop you for a little while. My belief is that they are trying to figure out where to put your site based on the backlinks that they have found.
-You could have been penalized for a number of reasons.

But in reality, it doesn't really matter. As long as your on page SEO elements are all in place, I would just worry about getting more backlinks and doing so CONSISTENTLY.

Give it another month of consistent backlinking and you'll likely see some movement.

How old is the site and how competitive is the niche?

I have had sites rank page 1, disappear for months, and then reappear on page 1 for the exact match domain keyword.

I have had sites get indexed, not show up at all for months, and then magically pop up in the number one position for the EMD keyword with minimal backlinking.

If you are in a competitive niche where many are competing for the top rankings, your competition could be constantly building backlinks and knocking your site down in the SERPS.

Sometimes a site will start out well and then fizzle and it seems like no amount of work will help it rank again.

Such is the nature of the beast.

One thing to watch out for is getting links from what google deems as bad locations or spam sites. I once experienced a big decrease in traffic after adding back links from a linking service.

    Hey brother, mix it up.

Don't rely completely on profile links and the like. Get some blog commenting and some misc 2.0 sites into the mix. Might even want to suck it up and do some article submissions. Think shotgun. Hit everything you can. Diversity.

Man, that backlinksblackbelt pdf is ancient but I used to love me some expression engine backlinks.

I've done the quality linking (articles, videos, social, forum sigs, blog comments) now I'm working on quantity.

One of my worries is that backlinksblackbelt is a dead project and I'm a sucker paying for it. I emailed them today if they don't respond soon I'll cancel it, but then what am I going to do?

Ok, it's back on page 1 again.

Sheesh. I wish I had never checked it!

I was actually thinking that internet marketing just wasn't going to work for me.

[Edit: I noticed I got a sale too!]

By the way, you can find good prices on backlinking here (WSOs & such) or on other sites like fiverr.com - $5 to do some work for you can be a useful 'dip your toe in the water' introduction to outsourcing, and if you find someone doing good work, you can hopefully maintain that relationship even if they cancel their fiverr gigs.

I was also going to suggest a variety of methods, not just profile links, but you're already on that so never mind, and good to hear of the latest update!

...I wouldn't be to concerned, maybe it's just a Google Dance? I would not stop building links to your site. I'm not a fan of profile links, I'm a fan of QUALITY blog comments and blog posts. I've had a ton of success with my clients sites.
