How to check my backlinks?

Hi folks!

I need help here, I have very little knowledge about back linking, maybe you can help me with this, I'd order a back link package in Fiverr, guy said he will submit my website to more than 150 quality online directories, after 7 days I received spreadsheet with 272 directories, checked my website didn't see any links from those directories, picked up randomly URLs from spreadsheet and checked those manually, couldn't find my website there.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, or I'm not checking in right way or with right software. I know that I have submitted my site to Digg, and my website is sitting there, but I don't see that link either.

I don't want to leave negative comment for that guy if I'm doing something wrong myself.

    • Actually I was thinking about that too, after I took a look at those directories, there is no valuable info only links to websites, is somebody using those directories for some another reason except back linking, don't think so.

Yeaa, looks like I did, but I'll survive without those $5 somehow, at least get some experience.

      Suggestions are always welcome!
    • Alexa, this is pretty darn brilliant. Nice contribution. There is one pretty friendly SEO directory I mess with, and have used with clients that has gotten me great results: addurl.nu

      Again, nifty tool.
  • They probably won't show up here yet if you just ordered them, but head over to yahoo's site explorer HERE.

You can see how many backlinks you've got, and from where they are coming.

  • I recommend Yahoo Site Explorer and Google Webmaster Tools for link checking.

I was in exactly the same situation. Purchased a cheap directory submission package and found only one indexed link as a result.

Move on and build quality links. And remember if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.
  • You have two issues here...

    1) In my experience directory back links have low value and there much higher valued back links out there - try .edu and .gov links instead.
    2) Just having a link is useless if it not indexed and followed. Back links can take months/years to be found.

Nowadays I don't chase directory backlinks unless I want be placed higher in Google Places.

If you buy directory services use Universal Directory Listings(UBL) they generally get you listed where it matters! Fiverr is great but not for this kind of service.

Lastly, give the fivver guy a break, just don't leave him a comment at all!
  • It is really best to check backlinks directly at the big three instead of relying on 3rd party sites.

Google: Google Webmaster Central. Get data about crawling, indexing and search traffic. Increase traffic to your site.

    Bing: Bing Webmaster Tools

    Yahoo: https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/mysites
  • Be careful on fiver alot of people on there from experience are actully using bot softwere on fiverr.com a guy i was intrested in before who i will leave nameless sent me the same links claiming they were high pr links and after i checked the links they were just dns register sites that check the who is and ping links.

There are some okay people on fiverr dont get me wrong im not flaming anyone.

But i would use backllinkwatch.com or yahoo site explorer to check the links to your site.

    hope that helps.

  • good info thanks
  • you can check back links by typing 'Link:yourwebsite.ext' in google.
  • In google check link:www dot yoursite dot com and in yahoo linkdomain:www dot yoursite dot com
  • Simply,go to yahoo search explorer and enter the URL you want to check into the search box at the top.then, click on the "Explore URL" button. When the results appears, click on the button that reads "Inlinks".
These are the backlinks to your website.

  • There is no 100% way to check backlinks, even with yahoo site explorer or good sites like backlink tracker, linkdiagnosis or using SEO Spyglass. There is always SOME hidden and there is NO way to see *all* backlinks.

And yes, directories are silly...furthermore it often takes time because directory owners manually approve links.

Waste your $5 on something other than directory "submission"....

profile links, blog commenting, directories, "I SUBMIT YOUR SITE TO 900 SEARCH EIGNES" etc...is all nonsense. Seriously. When do people wake up?
  • use backlinkswatch.com and yahoo site explorer to check backlinks
