Why pay for directory links

I have been researching directories, and basically these sites
only have page rank on their home page.

When you dig into your category the page is unranked, gray bar.

Why spend money to be listed here in terms of increasing rankings.

thanks

  • You have to spend money in order to get visitors and in hope that some day the inner pages might receive page rank which would ultimately get transferred to your website.
  • You're right. It is a waste of time and money. You will see no visitors.

There are some worth paying for, but you could count them on two
    hands. Maybe even one.

    • Yahoo dir, Business.com and DMOZ (if you can bribe em) are the only ones worth paying for...

Even still I have not noticed a boost in google rankings for yahoos directory but I am ranked in the top 3 as is. Yahoo's link did make me go from page four to page one instantly in yahoo search though... to bad no one really searches with yahoo.

All in all, if you are trying to rank seriously in the search engines and your competitors have these links you should too with no question.
    • No, two hands I'm sure. I have pagerank on many but not all inside pages. Funny this subject came up because I was on a mission tonight to find some PHPLD's with pagerank inside. One directory (that I don't own, but do respect) with PR inside is Add Url - Submit Site - Aviva Web Directory.
  • For me you don't have to spend money in submitting your site to directories. You can do it without spending money. You just have to be patient.

    • I notice a lot of these sites are using the same script. Is there a software out there that mass submits to these? Or did I just come up with my latest product
  • I feel you the only time you should pay for a directory is when they will place your link on their homepage so you can get the benefit of the pagerank...other than that its not really worth it
  • Sometimes, if you want to rank fast, you have to use paid directories. But don't worry, paid directories are worthy.

  • I agree with with you. This is also my question that Why spend money to be listed here in terms of increasing rankings. They are checking first page only.
  • I would rephrase the question something like this:
Why pay for links on directories that are not well maintained?
I would answer that you probably should not do that.

However, there are a number of directories out there large and small, niche and general, local and worldwide, that are maintained and do get traffic, and do help you in the google search results.

It is your job to decide which ones are worth your time. I've ranked many, many key phrases over the years with only directory submissions and nothing else. It can work if you are smart in your approach.
  • Some are paying for business directories to improve their rankings in Google business listing.
  • if you are Thinking you will get traffic from directory then you are wrong... the only benfit of directory submission is to get you website on first page of google.if you do paid listing then in most of directory you link be shown on home page so you will get automatically page rank...
  • you can get some traffic from these links even if they don't have any page rank, and the other thing is someday these pages can get page ranks, if so, you get the benefit.
  • Make sure you choose a good directory. Meaning choose something that has good page rank and traffic so that you can benefit in the long run
