Can I lose PR?

Lets say hypothetically, that I've a blog with a PR of 10. I've enabled commentluv and keywordluv and it's a dofollow blog. Various users link back from my blog to get PR.

Now, If I were to link to a certain site from the content (as in the article, not comments), will the recipient site get a high PR or because there are a high number of OBL, the PR juice going out is going to get reduced?

    I think it really depends upon the purpose of a site - ie, an ecommerce site shouldn't look to start linking out for spurious reasons, but may wish to link somewhere to relevant regulatory bodies or manufacturer sites if it could be helpful.

    I used to be really stingey with my links, but I've slowly come to realise that if there's a good reason for placing a link, then do so.

      Yes you may lose Pr if you do not update the content periodically and back links to your site declines.

      I run a web design company. What I plan to do is, start a website that talks about web design entirely and from the content (articles) I want to link back to my company page. In that way, I'm sticking to a particular niche.

      Do you think this is viable?

        Also, I want to enable comments with do-follow, so that I encourage conversations and I get some amount of traffic coming from people who are searching for do-follow blogs to comment on.

    Your PR will not drop because you have a high number of OBL, it has nothing to do with it. Just look at reddit.com for example which is basically a page full of OBL with PR8.

    You can lose PR however if some of your high PR backlinks become inactive or if they in turn lose PR and become less powerful. If a PR7 backlink becomes a PR3 for example, you too should expect a drop in PR.

    I all comes down to the power of your backlinks.

    I would keep on updating (or adding) content. This is what G is most interested in. It's more important than backlinks.

    Also - make sure your content is relevent. Relevence is the name of the game.

      I agree that quality content is extremely important, but in my opinion it does not influence the PR of any page.

      There are tons of websites or pages with almost no content what so ever but which have a high PR. Take search.yahoo.com for example which only has about 20 words in total and it's a PR8.

    First of all, an outbound link is an outbound link whether it appears within the text, comments or in the sidebar, the rules are the same.

    Yes, a small proportion of your page's PR is passed from your web page to the recipient page and yes it is shared between all outbound links. Whether some recipients get a higher proportion of that PR is open to debate and there are some complex algorithms going on under the bonnet of Google with regard to how PR is shared.

    In essence though, all links in the eyes of Google will pass a proportion of that pages PR and that page will see a small reduction in PR as a consequence. The viral nature of the web though will always ensure that a popular page will always have a high PR no matter how many outbound links it has. So this should never put people of from giving outbound links as this is what the web is all about.
