It won't be Spam if the article belongs to you, and You are the original creator. You do get Backlinks from Web 2.0 sites as many of them are DO follow. Personally, if I were to submit my article, I'll change it a bit, before I submit to web 2.0 Pages or Article Directories.

Nothing wrong with doing that but you might try to kill two birds with one stone, if possible. Use an excerpt from your article or a shortened version then link back to your site. You still get the backlink but you may get more direct traffic, too. You wouldn't want them to follow the link back to the exact same article.

You could link the article to a different page, too, of course.

If you are going to submit the same article to all of the sites it will be classified like duplicate content on the search engines and you will not get good rankings. Always unique should it be!

First of all, the first part of the statement is incorrect - that is not classified as duplicate content in that sense. Second, you may still get some rankings out of it but that's not a sure thing. But since he's trying to get backlinks, not rankings, what you say really is not relevant to his question.

The "duplicate content" part is confusing. Could you explain the fine points here?

I understand the part about back-links, and in that case the content is negligible, but I've understood that search engines consider the first indexed example of a work to be the original (and the site an authority site.) All other indexed examples are then classified as duplicates.

        Thanks

It does not actually work that way. First of all, just being first to be indexed does not mean that your site will be ranked. Google also takes into consideration the age, PR and authority of the sites involved. That's why you'll often see an article posted at EZA outrank the original site. That is something that can be overcome with time, though.

When people say duplicate content, they imply that the site will get some sort of punishment from using duplicate content. If that were the case, then people would NEVER be able to rank using PLR or articles syndicated from directories - but they do.

Is that the best way? No, not in my opinion. But to say that it must be unique content or it won't be indexed or rank is incorrect. And in this guy's case, he's just going for backlinks anyway so having unique content isn't going to be of much benefit to him.
