Forget the GAKT. You really should check out Jack Duncan's Keyword Sniper Pro 2.0 that was just released. It finds keywords that the GAKT hides.

Other than that, I like (in no particular order):

Market Samurai plus Google AdWords keyword suggestion tools are truly wonderful. The fact is that nowadays you may not even need learning of exact number of times words are searched per month but even general data and figures would help.

I don't want to say I am shocked but I am surprised. If you guys use so many tools, you guys must be making well over a million dollars a year.

I don't use any tools. I just do what I know and my sites rank at the top of search engines. Many # 1 and many in the top 10. I make over 10K a month these days as I am going through a transition. My main markets have dried up so I am ramping up my backup markets. My best years have been $2 million or close.

Please don't misunderstand my post. This is not a criticism. I just want to know that by using so many tools, are you guys making more than me? Please be honest. If you are, then I need to start using these tools also.

Again, please don't misunderstand my post. I am curious but not critical.

If you have made $2 million a year without spending money on or using any of these tools, some of which are quite expensive, perhaps you should share with us what you're doing. What are your secrets? What is it that you do in your "just do what I know" strategies?

Give us your tips on how to do it free rather than ask us why you should spend some money. And if you don't want to just give away the golden egg, then develop a video course and market a WSO here. I'm sure plenty of people would be willing to purchase a WSO on how to rank high while ditching recurring subscription tools if the process is easy enough. I know I would be interested in such a WSO if it were out there.

JaceBarnett I don't think I am doing anything special. I do SEO like I have been doing since 1996. Yes there have been new services since then (like WordPress, YouTube, Twitter ) and I do use them but at the core it's still the same. What I do takes time and I wish it didn't but it does. I am not opposed to tools but I know myself - I can very easily succumb to temptation and abuse the tools. Search Engines employ people that are a lot smarter than me and they will quickly take me to task.

My basic premise starts with the customer. So I try to think like one. If it is a corporate product, that is a different educational level and they conduct their searches differently. In other words, their English is different. Why does that matter?

Well that changes your key phrases and tags. For some odd reasons, Google gives a lot of weightage to Tags and none to Meta Descriptions. It used to be the other way around when Infoseek, Excite, WebCrawler, Alta Vista .... etc were big names. Yes I am dated. In addition, your page will be very toned down. Functional, informative but boring.

I understand PageRanks but could never figure out their worth. All the theory about them is fine. I respect it. But why one of my PR2 site shows up number 1 on Google. The second entry is a competitor with a PR6. I guess page rank works for him.

BookMarking - I understand the concept. It's worth I am not sure of. When I have experimented with BookMarks - they don't show up in sites connected. So why bother. I don't say they don't work. I am just an agnostic about them.

Directory Listing - The only directories that do matter are DMOZ and Yahoo Directories. Both seem to be 12 years behind schedule. Yahoo no longer offers free listing. If they do, they have it hidden somewhere and I don't want to pay $400 just to get listed in their directory.

Blog Comments: It works. But I only comment on very few blogs when I think I have something to say. Maybe doing it en masse would help.

Twitter is a very useful tool but not the way most people think. Tweeting all day long won't get you too many clicks. What I like is the SEO value of your tweet. For example, your twitter username is also your twitter page. On a traditional website, IANA — Example domains, yourpage is a specific indexable page. Accordingly, http://twitter.com/yourtwittername is an indexable page. So if you advertise your product as a tweet, you now have an external link pointing to your site. In my experience, when it really matters, don't use a link shortner on such tweets. It may not look neat but it matters to Google somehow.

You don't have to tweet all day long. Just create 3-4 twitter accounts and occasionally send out a tweet with your full link.

I will one day come up with a training course. However; that is easier said than done. To do stuff yourself is one thing. To come up with a training product is many times as hard. I intend to but when that would be, I do not know. Maybe end of this year or next.

Again, I hope I have not offended anyone.

Here is the sad part. No matter how thoughtfully you plan and then work your plan, extraneous circumstances can totally negate your efforts.

I wanted to do a serious time analysis of how long my promotional activities (all manual as I don't know much better) take me per subject or niche if you prefer to call it that way.

I planned everything around a keyphrase 'How to succeed at GDI'

After all my activities were done, I checked today where my various websites, blogs, videos etc. rank on Google. On the keyphrase, 'How to succeed at GDI', I rank # 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 11, 15, 18, 19, 22, 23, 25, 28, 29. That is 14 links on the first three pages.

I should be jumping with joy. Right? Not so fast.

A few weeks back, I had moved my hub ( I have a hub and spoke approach) to GoGvo.com. They were more expensive but I wanted a high availability host and I thought they would be worth it. Alas, over the last 30 hours, they have been down at least 13 times. This morning our server was down a good five hours.

So all those great positions on search engines are worthless - other than a little ego boost.

Instead of raking in the dough, I am now searching for another hosting company.
