Google is really prioritizing news above all else?

I was doing some niche research in Google this afternoon, just checking out the competing sites for different keyphrases and saw something amazing.

I just watched the #1 ranked site slide down and drop off the first page of Google in the space of about an hour as a breaking news story containing the keyphrase I was researching began to dominate the first page.

Never seen anything like it!

Google is really prioritizing news above all else.

Doesn't Google have a "tab" for News?

Thanks for sharing your observation - this is very interesting, I'm going to do some further research on this and report back here with my findings!

    Be back later,

I saw something similar happen to a popular online cooking magazine a few months ago, but it wasn't news that did it - it was poor reputation management. The magazine had an issue with a writer who claimed they had stolen her work. The editor came back with a terrible response and the blogging world took the story and ran with it. Days later, searches for that term came back with at least 4 pages of content about the issue - and the magazine itself was nowhere to be found in the search for its own name!

Were you logged into Google at all? They will sometimes try and personalize the results based on your behavior. So if you keep searching a particular term and not click on any of those top websites, Google will think they are irrelevant to you for that search and they will lower them down the rankings.

Does that happen in real time?

I was logged in and I was clicking on sites in the results. I didn't think my search habits would effect the real time results returned.
