Niche Research vs Keyword Research

Most of the people - before starting to invest into SEO - do keyword research, trying to choose the keywords with lower competition and higher traffic.
Ok, great, have nothing against it, done that hundreds of times.
BUT...
Aren't we missing an important point here? While researching the keywords in SEO most often people do not research the dynamics of these keywords. People do not check what niches are dying and what "sleeping" niches are about to burst out with great demand.

My question - does it make any sense to do keyword research without niche research?
