Position #2 on Google How to get to #1?

Ill get right into it. I am currently in position #2 on Google for a keyword phrase(exact) with 8000 local(U.S) monthly searches. I Have domain name with the exact key-phrase and I launched the site about 2 weeks ago.
I've been backlinking on Med-High PR Forum profiles, bookmarking them and pinging them. I've also wrote around 5 articles (Wheel) linking back to my mine site.

I have done No blog commenting, no reciprocal links and hardly any directory submissions.

My Question is How do I get to position #1? Should I keep doing what I'm doing or would I need more link juice by creating link wheels? And if so what is the proper way to create a link wheel?

Any suggestions would be great, Thanks in advance.

Congratulations on your success so far! I think that if what you're doing is already working then keep it up, but here are some more ways to get backlinks to your site.

Web 2.0 Properties (Squidoo, blogger, wordpress)

    Blog Reviews
    Press Release
    Website Directories
    Blog Carnivals

Also, you can get a lot more out of the articles you already wrote. You can convert them to PDFs and upload them to document distributors such as scribd.com, you can record yourself reading them or use a text-to-speech program to make an audio file and distribute it to audio directories or as a podcast, and finally you can turn them into videos and do some video marketing with them. Hope this helps.

You can build edu/gov backlinks and/or a backlink pyramid

I bookmarked the backlinks on digg and other high PR social bookmarking sites and then pinged the bookmarks at pingomatic.

Better you can do a competitor analysis. Analyze the backlinks of no #1 site and try to build a link from those resources. This will help you to get on #1 quickly.

Well what I would also do is create articles, web 2.0 properties, and ALSO big one is

guest post. <--- can be very good

Then bookmark these links and ping bookmarks to the links.

From what I've heard, a diverse link profile is a happy link profile. So right now all you have is forum profiles. You need to diversify.

Create more high quality backlinks but please do not close the loop in your linkwheel!

I heard of this before, not to close the loop in the link wheel. But what would be the perfect structure of the link-wheel? I've also heard of something called a magnet link-wheel, its the same time of process by linking all your web 2.0 sites to a site like squidoo and then link from squidoo to your "money site". Would this be as effective? I'm just kinda lost when it comes to the perfect structure of a link wheel.

According to me, you should use all seo channel to promote your websites. As, there is too much competition and due to this getting position 1 is not so easy. Therefore you move to user rest seo channel that you did not use still now.

Yes thats a quick result at position 2. Remember to build links to your backlinks too. So bookmark your squidoo/hubpages/ezine etc. Build some more web 2.0 sites and use those to link to your other ones. SocialAdr is good for getting your site bookmarked by people all over the world. Its free to use.

Thanks for the info. I was curious if it was true that .edu and .gov is losing there link power due to the fact that they are getting spammed alot. Would it still be worth getting links from them via blog/site commenting.

What your site is currently lacking is more trust and absolute relevance to really get that top spot. I suggest that you try to generate more in-content links pointing to your site with your targeted keyword as anchor text to really push it forward to the #1 spot.

I would like to do that but do the blogs have to be related to the niche? Also what if they site is over-spammed with blog comments, would there be any value at all to the backlink?

Topper, in my opinion blog comment links are a complete waste of your time. Google has really toned down their value since people are spamming the hell out of blog comments.

I would do the SEO spyglass thing and find a few quick links you could gobble up. I would also go social media crazy (FB, Twitter).

Honestly, build more backlinks! That's it. People make this way too complicated and as long as your backlink portfolio is somewhat diverse just blast the thing and it'll get there, this has been my experience.

It's links, links and more links.

If you've made number 2 in two weeks then I guess the competition is not too stiff and if you continue doing what you're doing then you will get there sooner rather tahan later I suspect.

If you want to know exactly what you need to do (and NOT for $90!!)
Get the free trial of Market Samurai and use the SEO competition module to see exactly how many, what quality and what anchor text backlinks the number 1 site has.

It may have more age than you but if you out-backlink then that won't matter.

Thanks for the feedback. Just a quick question regarding the Market Samurai Trial. How long does the trial last and would I be able to use all the functions?

      Thanks again.

You have the "dead-on" domain with the exact keyword phrase and that's good... Is it a .com? Is the #1 ranked site also a "dead-on" domain?

There are other important issues also to consider. One is domain age and there's nothing you can do about it... only wait!

Another issue is the number of indexed pages. Is your site a blog? Just post more and include tag and category pages in your sitemap.xml and submit it to google webmaster.

Regarding backlink you have a lot of good suggestion by other warriors.

One more thing: how about on-page optimization? Title, Meta Tags, Keyword Density, H1, Bold, Italic, etc... Is it optimized.

I suggest you use this two resources:

Just google: "SEO workers tools" and "seo-analyzer.org" (I can't post links... I have only 6 posts...)

    Good luck!

Could this create duplicate content issues?

On my Wordpress sites I noindex the category pages but allow tag pages. Can't say if it's helped, but it probably hasn't hurt, right?

      Has anyone tested this?
