For once I'm registering a URL not for one of my online business sites but for the band I play in. The band name is a bit generic, and I've noticed that the .COM that I want has been taken, but the .NET is up for grabs. Actually, both "bandname" .com and .net are taken, but "bandnamemusic.net" (which I'll settle for) is free whereas "bandnamemusic.com" is taken.

I've never registered a .NET. I know in the past .NETs were for tech companies but now it's pretty much whatever. I dunno, is it cool to register a .NET now, is it generally any more difficult to register a .net compared to a .com?

It is cool to do that. dot nets are used in a lot of ways now. And it shouldn't be any harder to register at all. At least I have never found it to be any harder.

Go for it. registering a .net is exactly the same as registering a .com

.net in my opinion work just as well as .com.

Although if it is for promotional purposes, a .com is always easier to remember.

for ranking, yes - but you have an extra factor here.

You are banking on the name of your band and you likely want to not confuse members into going to the other dot com.

I would add something to the domain name personally, and get a dot com for your band on this one.

(I would consider the dot net too as an extra thing but not for the primary site)

      what about something like bandnamerocks.com?

I'm going to go against the grain and say that you should find a creative way to work your band name into a .COM instead of a .NET

    Why?

The fans that will be visiting your site.

The fans are automatically going to type in .COM first because this is standard. When they do that, they'll find your competitors. They may never even think to search for you with a .NET.

So, you should brainstorm a creative way to register a .COM

    Examples:

    bandnamerocks.com

    bandnamesongs.com

    bandnamesite.com

    bandnamenews.com

    bandnameinfo.com

    bandname411.com

If you put your heads together, you could probably come up with other alternatives.

Thanks for the great responses so fast. Well I did some more brainstorming and actually went with "rock" to throw in on the end to secure the .COM which wasn't taken fortunately. Another band I like with a VERY generic name did that, so there you go.

But yeah it was the fact that most people who would listen to us as many of you were saying would be unlikely to search with .net in mind and would have a difficult time finding us. Thanks again!

Now the other question is should I keep the same "rock" suffix for when registering a name with all of the social media sites like youtube and such to keep it all under the same brand name, or if just the plain band name is available on a social media site should i take it?

I would keep it the same. Consistency prevents confusion.

You should add your band to our new site, AddYourBand.com. The link is in my sig. It's free.

Stay consistent with your main promotional efforts (as in use "rock"), but get the other available versions ("plain") registered - just in case you need them sometime in the future.

.net seems to do pretty well for some of my websites. I haven't put up a ton of websites, but it seems like com, net, and org do equally well for me so far.

Well, if you guys are a rock band then great, but you can always add a different word at the end, just incase you guys aren't into rock.
    Like - "bandnameblues.com" or maybe "bandnamerap.com".
    Just a thought.
Good luck with you guys, hope you become the next Beatles.

I know this doesn't help with your current situation but I think this is an great lesson for people starting bands... if possible when naming your band start by seeing if it's available as a dot com first.

I've started a number of different business over the past few years and one of my first steps has been to come up with a list of possible names and check .com URL availability. If the .com URL isn't available... I pick another name.

Each one is OK, .net domain is as good as .com domain. Extension is not very important, I think, by contrast, domain name is more important than extension.

I know people think it is no longer cool. Com domains, but with some intereting branding, you will find another domain that people will not have to find.
