I have been researching SEo, but it seems very complicated to me. I am new to IM and recently created a blog. I am still working out the kinks but I decided to make it open to the search engines about 3 days ago. Today it started showing up in google. (4th page) I have bookmarked a few of the pages and have a few articles pointing toward the site. I know that I need to expand on these efforts, but what other steps should I be taking to improve my rankings? Should it be higher than the fourth page when it initially gets ranked or is this nomal?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

How well you rank is dependent on a lot of things. If you don't have a lot of competition then you may be able to rank high pretty quickly. I think I would start focusing on backlinking if I were in your position.

Fourth page is fine, gain back links or purchase packs to boost your authority on the web.

Also made sure you have your keyword at a density of 3-7%

My advice would be to focus on just one or two simple methods of building backlinks. Be consistent.

Also, make sure that your on-page SEO is decent, because that alone can give you a big boost in the SERPs.

    Also, wrong forum.

      OR, don't link at all.

Just start a Wordpress blog in extremely low competition keys.

Two important things in seo are:
CONTENT - unique content on your site, optimized, keywords placed on your site (but not too much), good internal linking, sitemap, meta tags
LINKS - from other sites basicly, articles, directories, social bookmarks, profile links, forums etc.

It's like a good drink, you need to put a little bit of this and a little bit of that to have it good

        Ok. Let's get more specific.

First I would suggest writing some more articles and adding them to sites like:
        ezinearticles.com
        ArticlesBase.com
        buzzle.com
        AffSphere.com
        goarticles.com
        articlealley.com
        articledashboard.com
        articlesnatch.com
        amazines.com
        ideamarketers.com
        isnare.com
        articlecity.com
        articlecube.com
        web-source.net
        submityourarticle.com
        free-articles-zone.com
        articlerich.com
        site-reference.com

Number one for me is ezinearticles, also the articlebase and goarticles are good.

The next thing would be to do some social bookmarking (link to you main website and you can also link to your ezinearticle to give it more power - "link juice"). The list of social bookmarking sites can be found on this site:
Social bookmarking service. Fast tagging and posting to all major social websites - SocialMarker.com
This site will also help you adding your links (use the form on the site). It's free but you need to create accounts manually.

Another thing you should do is make a video about your website or whatever you are promoting and post it to youtube. Include your link in description (http://yousitename.com - like this) and put your main keyword in the title of the video. Sometimes the video can rank in top10 in google (if there are video results) and it will bring you traffic. Belive me, it works as I did it myself.

Good thing to do is to build some web 2.0 properties. I mean sites on squidoo.com, wordpress.com, blogspot.com, hubpages.com etc. They all allow you to post content with links to your site. There are many more sites like those but I don't have any list right now so I can't give you any, sorry. Remember to link those site, you can do this with social bookmarking that I writed about above.

        And what's next?

For example you can sign up to some forums that are related to your website topic, make some posts (don't spam) and include link to your site in signature.

If you have some money you can also buy some link building service like profile links. If you do the points above you can link all those articles, web 2.0 properties and your main site and get some very good results.

I hope it helps you. Many of those things can be automated but if you are doing it first time I would suggest to do it by hand to understand how it works

  • I would focus on links and getting the word out on Facebook and Twitter, as those 2 have a lot of impact now. Also it would be good if you could do a press release check out PRLog because when you submit it there, they actually publish it to Google News for free. That is HUGE, and the quickest way to get to the top. Make sure your headline is keyword rich and very targeted. But it doesn't last long, so you would have to keep doing this to stay on the top.

If you know a lot about your topic, maybe start writing articles and distributing them so other people can publish your content, and give you back links. If you are not good at writing, you can hire someone to write you an article or press release for $15. Hope that helps.

POPULARITY IS THE NEW SEO ~Jack H.

Think about your blog the way a mom who doesn't know a dang thing about SEO thinks about helping other moms on her blog.

Standard SEO gets you ranked for a few keywords if you work hard. POPULARITY gets you ranked for hundreds and then thousands of keywords because Google recognizes how people are trying to find you. (some of this also applies to standard seo... there is a blending)

The point is how you think about rank. it comes naturally with great content. make sure your content is exciting or thought provoking to those who read it.

Make sure you give ways for people to interact and respond to your blog. Use social sites to spread the word about your website...

I will give you one tip, content, content, content.. Get access too many web 2.0 blogs and submit these articles with one backlink back to your site. Google eats up fresh content and will give your backlink a lot of lovin. This is just one important factor.

    Standard answer: It depends.

What keyword phrases are you trying to rank for? What KW phrase showed up on page 4?

Once the "Google dance" is over, you may find your site a lot lower down on the results pages.

How competitive are the keywords? The most basic advice I can give is this:

Using your main keyword, find out what the top 10 are doing in terms of SEO...and then do MORE.

For example, if the sites have between 200 and 2000 backlinks, you better have at least 200 backlinks just to compete.

    Short story: Beat your competitors.

you should go to relevant sites and exchange links. Submit your site to link directories and make sure you add in meta tags. You should also make sure you have a right amount of keyword density in your content. Hope this helps

    great post with great recommendations.
@ Art_Marks: you stated that ezinearticles.com is number one for you. Could you share why you prefer ezinearticles over others? The points might be useful to us as well.

    Cheers!
