Understanding SEO Rankings WorldWide

My friend just told me he is #1 for "internet marketer" in a certain country for Google.

How does Google decide whether a webpage is indexed on page 1 depending on the country.

What if I want to rank really well in a specific country?

How do you do that?

Google considers hundreds if not thousands of factors including user history, click stream data, and regional popularity of sites. The best way to do better in a region is to promote your website to people in that region or country.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

Good question - one important factor is your country setting for that site in Webmaster Tools. Also, I have put a 'language' meta-tag in the header for that particular language, if it's en-GB, I betcha Google takes that into consideration, as opposed to if it says en-US. For example...

Probably backlinks from local TLD's too, like .co.uk links to a UK site, say. Also, maybe having it hosted in that country, though I am not so sure about that one.

I have many niche sites that target Ireland and the UK. There are 3 main things to do:

    - Get a country-specific domain name (example .co.uk - but not required)
    - Put geotags in the header (some say the search engines ignore these now, but it doesn't hurt - here is a generator.)
    - Go into Webmaster Tools and set it to target that specific country.

NOTE: If you do this, you're rankings for all the other countries will usually fall drastically.

Ok; great. I did go into webmaster tools months ago and choose to focus results on the US for my website. Great points.

    Thanks.

Add a mailing address or P.O. Box number in the contact us page for the country you are trying to target. Or, something as simple as, "overnight shipping to U.S.A. or Canada, or Ireland or whatever country you are trying to target. Remember, Google TRIES to return relevant results to the users of that region. Showing you are "open for business" in that country, makes it more relevant.

Your TLD, on page content, and physical server location are also points to consider.

there is a setting in webmasters tools

    get links from local businesses

and if its a local business you can also submit it in
    http://www.google.com/local/add local business directory

I am sure the other search engines have similar tools but does anyone really care right now ?
