Hi guys,

I`ve had this site for ages i built it after buying a WSO where i found some high paying keywords wrote a bunch of articles and used blog commenets to drive traffic to the site.

Anyway i have been thinking about trying to make a authority site out of it but i need some advice ,

I added Thesis theme to the site but i`m not sure if its a good theme or not i dont understand how it works or i dont understand how to build a large site more likely anyway..

Can anyone explain what this page is ? ..

Go to the home page h t t p://waterdamagesite.net,

Then on the left is the categories but if i click say the top one `Flood damage`

I get taken to this page h t t p://waterdamagesite.net/category/flood-damage/

This is my problem what is this page ? Does every site work like this ?

I have read Xfactors new authority site guide and it says to backlink the homepage to the categories page does that mean that i should backlink from the homepage to this url h t t p://waterdamagesite.net/category/flood-damage/ or to the article inside that page ?

I`m alittle confused and i dont want to spend anymore time or money if i`m doing this wrong and would it be better to start again with a fresh neich and Theme ?

Hope you guys can help

Jim

I think you are referring to a blog category page. If so, it will only show posts that are associated with that category.

Each post can be assigned to a category but if there are no posts in a category in WP, I was under the impression that the category would not even show up in the sidebar. Someone correct me if I am mistaken.

To say of what is that it is not, or of what is not that it is, is false, while to say of what is that it is, and of what is not that it is not, is true.

That's correct. However, some themes, at least mine, allow you *the option* to show empty categories, since the category landing page might be all you have to show (ie, no articles, and the category landing page IS your best article), in which case it will essentially be a mini home page with no "related articles" attached to it.

        Hi Scott,
This is Jim i am a customer with you i bought and did you a comment for your SEO plugin,

As you know Xfactors material very well when he talks about silo ing his sites and backlinking from the homepage to each categorie in the case of my site and the flood damage categorie `h t t p://waterdamagesite.net/category/flood-damage/`

Would i backlink this page from the homepage or the page inside `h t t p://waterdamagesite.net/flood-clean-up-important-information-to-recover-from-water-damage/ ` ?

I just want someone to let me know if i`m doing this correct

        Jim

Hi Jim, yes you need to link to the category landing from the home page, just as John describes. Then the category landing page needs to have some good content on it (not just a list of links to articles in the category) that becomes your main destination page for this topic. You'll place ads on this landing page, and it will contain a list of "Related Articles" at the bottom that link to the articles, you've assigned to the category. You will also have ads on these pages for longer tail searches.

The key difference in Xfactor 1.0 sites and XFactor 2.0 sites like you are proposing, is that with XF1, we concentrated on the home page as the main money page, and that was the single page that we got most of our clicks and revenue from.

However, with the XF2/InlineSEO model, we now have the potential, in a single site, to have MANY home pages that we can monetize, not just one. These are your category landing pages. And each of these landing pages, also link down to more specific topical content that is also monetized. This is the silo in action. Make sense now?

I'm not sure what you will have to do with Thesis in order to automate all of this, but since you have CE4, you can get my XFactor 2.0 template add on, to make quick work of it, without having to hire a Thesis developer to do all the necessary bits for you.

I'm saying that if you are trying to build an authority site that is modeled after John's latest ebook example, then Thesis is not, out of the box, going to allow you to do all of that.

With CE4's category indexing options, you can do this with a couple of button clicks (that's what I mean by "automated").

I can't imagine Thesis has anything close without custom development.

                Right ok Scott,
But all i now have to do is write some good content for each of the categories on my site as this was what i was missing and then i will be able in theory build a authority site and link the homepage to each categorie page right ?

I am going to buy the new xfactor theme for my next site !

NO, not with the Thesis theme, for the reason's I've stated.

      BUT,

You can do it with CE4 because I've built in custom enhancements to the WordPress category editor to allow you to do it. But until you switch over from Thesis to CE4, you'll never see any of this.

Pm me if you need further explanation ;-)
