I am trying to outrank a site on google

there are only a few similar businesses listed in my area
My business has been around forever but we just got our website live several months ago

the other two competition businesses in my same business are several years old domains with approx 25 to 30 backlinks

Mine is as I said 2 months old domain with about the same number of backlinks

How long do you think it would take me to outrank them?
I just want to outrank them on BlahBusiness XYZ area

their backlinks are just basically anchor text with the name of their business
the only reason they get pulled up high with Blahbusiness XYZ area is IMO
they have older domains that are more aged because their backlink text certainly has nothing to do with those kws

If I get lets say a few hundred backlinks over the next 6 mos do you think I could outrank them? or do you think they will still outrank me because of their domain age

    Hello

Firstly if you are concerned about domain age, you could buy an aged domain to help with the process (i.e auctions.godaddy.com). But basically if you get more backlinks to your page using the keyword as anchor text you want to rank for, then you will outrank the other guy. It's as simple as that.

You should of course make sure your own page is 100% on-page optimized for the keyword you want rank for as well.

    Cheers,

    Stian

You should definitely start to outrank them in a few months with some good backlinks, be sure to check getlisted (dot) org (sorry can't post links yet) as this is a great tool for getting local and relevant links to our business...

I cant really buy an aged domain , well actually the one I bought is aged, it was the name of our business with a slight twist, someone else owned it and parked it, so I think google might not even see the domain as aged since it was not being utilized even though it was owned

currently my 2 competitors have about the same number of backlinks as me (this is an offline buss by the way, brick and mortar hotel/resort)

However all their backlinks are basically like this
    nameThierhotel.com
    www.nameTheirHotel.com

    etc
pretty useless really the only reason they outrank me now IMO is because

    1. my domain is only purchased and put up Feb 10
    2. they have been around for years with zero competition online

I hope I outrank them that would be fun, since they are right down the street, I dont expect to for about 6 months even one year would be ok, frankly I dont have enough rooms in the hotel to handle a huge influx of online requests and plan to add about 20 more rooms this year (fun but should pay off)

cool thing is once I do (hopefully) outrank them
they will have no clue how i did it since backlinks is so unknown to 99 percent of web unsavvy businesses

heck 90 percent of the hotels in the area have NO WEBSITE at all, which is odd, they survive by word of mouth advertising

What keyword are you competing for? How many links does both of you have using that exact keyword?

Exact keyword links are very important... Stian was getting at that earlier. Simply having a larger number of links won't necessarily do the trick, you need to look at things like the anchor text, where that link is coming from, the page rank of the page sending the link, age of the sending domain, etc etc...

Nonetheless, if he's only got 30 or so links, you should be able to out rank him fairly easily, with probably fairly low level links.
