1 Mega site or 10 mini sites?

When I say this, what I mean is, what would you prefer.

1 site that is #1 in google for a keyword searched 50,000 a month and let's say you made: $10,000 a month with this site.

Or

10 Sites that are on page 1 for different keywords for 2-5k search volume a month. Which equaled to $10,000?

I think I know what most people would choose but why?

Don't catch me on numbers because if I had one of these I would not be asking this question....
#mega #mini #site #sites
  • One megasite: far easier to leverage, outsource and even sell.

Um this is easy. I would rather have ONE site making $10,000 per month than 10 making $1,000 per month. Why? Because keeping up with ONE site is easier than TEN.

      is it though?

i think that one site making 10k per month must be a BIG website with a dedicated following. this means it must be firing on all cylinders at all times - up to date and on the ball.

smaller sites on the other hand require less dedicated maintenance, attract a smaller readership and require less updates. also, if you have 10 sites and the temperamental beast that is google decides to drop one of them, you dont lose everything.

give me multiple streams any day. depending on your outlook, they require MORE maintenance than a large site, but at least you dont have all your eggs in one basket.

If it takes you the same amount of time to run 10 small ones as it does for the 1 big one then I would go with the small ones. If you only have 1 and something bad happens, you lose everything. If someone bad happens to 1 of your 10 then at least you still have 9 others still earning you money!

I would say one mega site, surely that'd be easier to keep up with and maintain than 10 different sites

OK so ten mini sites are better because you can cross link them and if one site becomes controversial then you still have the other nine. Also, you can sell one. That is if you need quick money.

I would get a HG reseller account to host them on. Also, I would use straight HTML using free ware tool kompozer instead of wp.

WP is great if you got very little traffic, but it does not scale up. Typically it is due to mysql which is a resource pig. The result is you get kicked out by the web hosting service.

  • The big one... Small sites are bound to (eventually) die out in the rankings or what have you if they aren't updated. As they are updated over time they become big in their own respect.

So its far easier to just have 1 big site. The only problem with having one big site is it takes much longer to get it working because usually your aiming for a very hard keyword, and then your also trying to rank for secondary keywords.

I would take one megasite any day of the week!

Definitely. However...saying that, if you had 10 sites making the same as the one mega site. With outsourcing you could possible make more with the minisites, especially when you want to sell it. It will be a good hook for a potential buyer.

If I did it myself...I would rather go with one site.

The question is, whats easier? To get one site making $10,000/month.. or making 10 sites add up to $10,000. I think it may be the latter

    Do it in phases:

Phase One: Operation I don't know which site will work best

Build 10 mini sites, get them all ranked, see which one produces the best commissions.

Phase Two: Operation I know which site worked, so build it into an authority site now

Take the best mini site and make it into an authority site. This will be hard to do if you're doing exact match domain names though.

Overall, why just build one authority site? Build a bunch, make them have 100 pages of content to start, (before you do any backlinking), then keep building them slowly over time.

agree with tom - i'm really, really surprised at some of the responses here.

personally i think an optimal scenario would be 2-3 "mega" sites and a load of mini's.

It really depends.. If you want to make one website generating this kind of income you will have to be patient and willing to work. I prefer minisites, because what happens if you choose to make one big website but you made the wrong decision choosing a niche or keywords?

If you make a minisite you will rank it easier (exact domain match for the keyword etc.) and when it ranks well you can move on to another one or sell it. However, I wouldn't expect minisite to make $1000 a month (only some of my review sites did it).

1 site is best to monitor and maintain than 10!

But, on the other hand, you should not put all eggs in one basket, specially if you do SEO... Google is always changing their search algorithm and even if you do everything right it's not guaranteed that your site won't fall in the ranking...

Why not try an intermediate option:

5 sites, each giving you $2000 per month!

I would go with the 10 mini-sites, but not because of the "don't keep all your eggs in one basket" philosophy. I definitely agree with that to an extent, but my reasoning is more along the lines that if I was making that kind of income off each of those sites I see no reason why I couldn't turn them into 10 authority sites or at least turn some of them into authority sites and grow the others somewhat along the way.

I suspect you'd have better odds of getting 10 niche sites to $33.33 per day each versus 1 Mega site to $330 per day ?

The nice thing is that you can have 1 mega site and 10 mini sites. Because if they are making money you can outsource all the work and just manage one team doing everything for you.

        Wow.

In a previous thread you said you've been doing this for a year, so since you started you've been happily making 50 sites a month? Or just over 11 a week?

If you make just $10 a day, per site, that's $180,000 a month for 600 sites. That's very impressive for someone who's only been going for a year.

        You should write a WSO.

          Richard,

I know you said this sarcastically, but it's really not that hard to believe. We have over 300 sites since December and are currently making 80-100 new sites per month. That's the No-BS truth.

Now...$10/day? Meh...not quite! Much, much less than that. Some of them are at the $2-$3 dollar a day range, though, for whatever it's worth.

That being said, I'd MUCH rather have 10-15 sites pulling in the same kind of income than the 300 we have...but I'd rather have the 10-15 than just 1 authority site.

It's not impossible, but as a generality I would say most people with 600 websites don't have all of them making $10/day - maybe more like $10/month each Which is still pretty nice but would take a lot to manage.

For me it would depend on the traffic source and business model. If I was dependent on SEO then 10 sites no doubt. Far too risky to rely on a single site to keep ranking, especially these days after Panda.

I remember posting in this topic a couple of months ago and I'm about to completely backtrack on what I said previously.

Previously I said 10 mini sites would be better because you have more assurance. Well I tried this, it proved more hassle than it was worth.

Now I am working on an authority site with hundreds of pages, each one backlinked and optimised for keyphrases. Theoretically, it will be EASIER to rank new pages than putting up new sites as the authority will be passed around the site. Here's hoping.

Honestly, you'll find EVERYTHING is easier to leverage if you do BOTH. Yes, it's more work in some respects. But having one main site with 5-10 feeder sites to create backlinks and drive traffic back and forth is working really well for me.

It doesn't make any difference, your ranking individual pages not entire sites for targeted keywords.

If you have a new keyword, build a new page, etc...

My choice is a large site, it's just less work IMO (setting up multiple domains, etc...).
