Noob.. When in a # 3 position, how to diagnose 1-2 competitors?

So, I'm kinda new to SEO but optimized the **** out of my site and feel its only a backlink issue. Other than running my competitors through Yahoo site explorer, is there a way to properly analyze what my competitors have. I'd like to know if im days, months or years away from getting the 1-2 position, or another thought if outsourced is if im $50, $500, thousands away from that goal

    link building should get you to no. 1 position but if your competitors are out there from years then they have a slightest advantage because of their site age. Yahoo site explorer and backlinkwatch should do the job finely.

    check out the free version of seo splyglass. It pulls data from yahoo, but it organizes it for you to let you really dig down and see the backlink profile of a competitor. You can look at PR range, platform type, keyword density percentage, nofollow %, etc etc
