Need Advice, SEO & Ranking Very Competitive Keyword!!

There is a very competitive keyword I really want for one of my blogs and I keep thinking that I can pull it off. I have a couple big keywords already that I worked my butt off to get but nothing to this magnitude.

I've got a keyword that receives 673,000 exact searches per month and has 5.9 million competing sites. The top site, when I search through backlink watch, says it has 12540 backlinks. Now this isn't a huge company either that is controlling the top spot so I'm figuring they outsourced a bunch of backlinking. Plus they weren't even on the front page a month or two ago, seems like a new site.

So my question is, would it even be possible for a little guy like myself to unseat a site with that many backlinks? Just doing the math in my head it would take me a months to build that many backlinks myself and would cost a fortune to outsource.

Has any of you undertaken such a daunting task like this? Any advice would be appreciated it.

Thanks,
-Jay Vance

I would definitely study the competitions links; work out their strategy and then improve on it. If like you say they're very new on the scene you have a better chance of displacing him compared to a 5+ year old boy!!

It ain't gonna happen over night.

Keep adding quality content and quality backlinks every week and you will get there eventually. Without knowing a TON of other factors there is no other realistic answer than the one I just gave you. PM me if you have more questions.

It's really hard for anyone to even give a time frame, because there are thousands of factors that go into SEO, and it's always changing. But, if you keep adding value and stick to non spammy link building anything is possible. Btw, I am not saying don't automate, just don't blast out junk.

PM me if you have more specific questions, or my partner, Garage Media on this forum, he's more of the expert.

SEO Spyglass is good, but you could also try (google "link diagnosis examine your seo competition") sorry can't post links yet.
Basically you will see what the strongest backlinks of a given URL are.
Do this check for all your competitors and try to get similar links. And if you want to automate, do it through web 2.0 buffer sites to make sure your money site is not at risk. Better try to rank for long tails with your keyword in it first, this will help with the main keyword.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I can tell some of it was for sure crowd sourced by the looks of it. I know this won't happen overnight but I'm hoping it could be something I could pull off if in 4 to 6 months of working on it almost everyday.
