Has anyone had experience of knocking an exact domain match from the top SERP position?
We're talking about a site with NO backbacks. Top, only by virtue of being an exact keyword match, and is otherwise undefended.

How much SEO "activity" would that require?

They are always tough ones to crack especially if they are aged and have been there for sometime, not impossible though by any stretch of the imagination. It all depends on what forms of seo you are practising , methods of link building, how often you are actively working on your site etc

I think almost none SEO activity is needed, keywords in domain names have great impact on SEO.

I think OP wonders what kind of SEO firepower it would take to get such an EMD out of the top again. So in this scenario, the EMD is his competitor, not his own site he wants to rank.

@Ryan: This definitely depends on how long that EMD has been sitting there, what kind of domain you were able to register and your SEO skills. Apart from the mandatory onpage seo, it would still take a bunch of links to your site to outrank the EMD.

The EMD will be favored in G's eyes, even if you just add a stop-word to your domain. It definitely is possible to outrank it though, especially if there was no offpage SEO done on the EMD.

I think it would be a very difficult task because you would need a lot of backlinks and great onpage SEO to succeed with this.

  • If you see that the EMD has spammy backlinks or other illegal SEO tactics, then you can submit the site as spam to google. Only do this if there really are TOS breaking SEO tactics being deployed by the site.
