Preemptive SEO - Any advantage to starting several years early?

If I wanted to launch a site in a few years from now, would focusing on SEO prior to launch help at all?

    SEO can be a big investment, so I would never SEO a property you want to get into and out of quickly.

    Second, SEO requirements change regularly, so if you did it now, it may be useless three years from now.

    And if you are sitting on a butt load of product now that you cannot sell in the open market for legal reason, why not wholesale the product in bulk to someone who isn't limited by legal constraints?

      Though I want to get in and out, I am looking at about $150k worth of retail product so fast might be 6-9 months as opposed to 1- 2 years of grass roots advertising.

      Selling to a wholesaler now would still void the contract so that is no go.

    Are you sure that attempting to rank a website over theirs wouldn't count as competition?

      My thoughts exactly. If you're not monetizing the site in any way whatsoever, you may not technically be considered competition, since all you'd be offering is information. I think you seriously need to consult a lawyer. This is probably way beyond the expertise of most on the forum here. (hint: don't just call lawyers and ask them questions about whether they think it is legal or not, they'll always tell you it's completely doable in hopes of signing you as a client, when the specifics of the contract and your plans may be in conflict - they won't get that far with you on the phone and may completely change their tune once hired. You need to shell out and hire a good lawyer if you're serious about moving forward).

    I tend to agree with Colin. You really need to clarify the terms and definitions of the non-compete agreement before taking any action.

      Since you are obtaining a lawyer, have him or her go over the terms of the non-compete (or contract) first to see if it actually is legal and enforceable. After you get that clarification, you can discuss what you want to do, and when you can do it. That will clarify how to arrange your business activities without getting into problems.

      You could of course set up a generic site and start doing link building for it now, but not define the purpose of the site for three years.

      But I would expect that the site should be set up with the strategy that it could be used for any purpose at any time in the future, and not to specifically SEO for the terms that would put you in competition with your client.

      Perhaps your best solution is to work with your client and have them help you get rid of your inventory, so you don't have to sit on it for three years. You will not be competing with them directly, if they buy your stock at discount and sell it through their own channels.
