Is PageRank 0 really as bad as I think it is?

Launched a site properly in August 2010. Before that, I had a holding page up. I registered the domain, and I don't think it was ever registered before.

It's linked to within my network of sites, several of which being PR6.

And here's the thing: "PR check" tools show it has a PageRank of 0.

Furthermore, only 2.50% of traffic comes from non-paid search. My normal site average would be in the 70%s.

What gives?!

I can't say for sure, but keeping the site updated and a constant stream of backlinks from sites related yours may help to pick up the pace of organic traffic.
  • PR0 is the first step. PR n/a would actually be lower.

I believe google has done one global PR update since you launched the site.
How far did you think you should climb?

I would not concentrate on PR, but getting targeted traffic from
non-google sources. Do that in large enough quantities, and the
    rest snowballs.

Your stats may be way off.

  • Try getting links from high PR websites (4-5) and try to customize your site for one or two keywords. In header, title, meta, description etc. You'll get a higher ranking soon!
  • Thanks for the replies and valuable input.

I was getting worried that 0 meant that I was being penalized and had done something wrong, although I certainly hoped not.

But thankfully 0 means that I just haven't made to 1 yet

My link profile outside of my own hosted sites is poor, so I need to work on that.
  • Dear Eoin, As you have said that you have bought abc.com domain in August 2010 & still your site is showing PR 0. But according to me we must gain PR 1 in first six months so It could be say little bad. (sorry to saying this) Now if you are worrying about your PR 0 & seriously want to improve it then try to create quality back links for your website.

For creating quality back links please do under given works for your site :

    - Submit your website in High PR SEO friendly directories.
    - Create an article & submit in top article directories.
    - Do social bookmark submissions.
    - Submit your website in major press release websites.

(be aware that submit your website in most relevant categories)

    - Create back links through Link building. (send request for link exchange those sites which are related to your theme & have Home page PR minimum 3)

Best of luck for next PR updation.

    Regards,
    Lammy
  • You think that just because you link to a new website from your network of 'high page rank' sites that traffic is just going to start flowing in automatically? Not quite how it works my man.

    • No need to put it like that my man. Since some of my other sites have risen to PR 6 (over a long long time), I wanted to know if PR 0 meant penalization, or if it was simply where each site started at. Of course, self-linking does little for PR benefits directly.

  • PR 0 is definitely not a problem. When performing search queries, how many webpages being ranked in the top are having PR 0? Don't worry too much! keep on moving on you SE0 plan.
  • I have found a better way to ask what I wanted to know:

Do sites start out with a PR value 0 or 1?

And thanks, it has already been answered to be 0.
  • PR0 is step 1. PR N/A is as low as it gets. But like others have said, Google is pretty slow when it comes to updating their PR data. Chances are you could already be PR1 or PR2.
  • If your site's PR dropped, build backlinks. That's the bottom point of it.
