Advice on backlink building!

Ok i thought i kind of had link building figured out, however it seems to not quite be working for my recent website. I know links arent just going to be built overnight and i do have to do more work on building links but i thought id have had more backlinks than i actually have from the work i have done so far.

I have submitted one article to several article sites but only seem to have backlinks from 2 of these sites. (I know i need to submit lots more articles to see a major benefit.)

I have submitted to several link directories, posted comments in a few forums with my signature included, created squidoo lenses and posted links to my articles via facebook and twitter. From all of this i only seem to have about 12 backlinks, am i just expecting too much from this or do you think i should have more from what i have done so far?

Does anyone have any more ideas on how i can crate more backlinks?

I'm a little confused about what social bookmarking actually is. Is this basically posting links to your site on sites like facebook, twitter and myspace etc?

I have done blog commenting to my 2-3 site and I have seen lots of change in the ranking and of course in backlinks too.

You should backup those content postings you have already done with social bookmarking. Every time you post articles, content, or blog posts, you should be supporting those posts from sites like digg, stumbleupon, reddit, etc...

When you say you only have about 12 links to show for your efforts. What do you mean? You obviously have more then 12 links if you have published more than 12 links yourself (unless they've been deleted).

Are you talking about the amount of links you see in Yahoo Site Explorer or something?

If that's the case. It doesn't matter in any way what links you can see there. The important part is that Google has indexed them.

Hey Kristoffer, thanks for your reply. Yes i was meaning the links shown in yahoo explorer. By looking at what you have written maybe i am taking too much notice of the number of links shown in yahoo explorer.

How do i check that my links have been indexed by google? Should they all appear if i just typed my url in the search engine?

If you are looking in Google or similar for backlinks your results are not accurate.

Yes it takes time to see links show up but even then most SEs don't display full, or even close, or current backlinks. That does not mean they are not being counted and affecting your ranking.

Just keep building links, if you know you have them then they are there and working for you.

As for the 4-6 weeks, your site is still pretty new, stop worrying about analyzing what you have done and just keep putting out links. The real analysis should come from the results over time, as you gain positions in SE rankings.

It's posting links to your content on sites like Digg or Reddit. Can be a useful technique to drive traffic.

I guess only traffic but not backlinks. Digg do not provide even nofollow links. Correct?

Just to clarify with posting on social sites like Digg and Stumble.

What's the right method in doing it? Let me write in point forms.

    1. Post your unique content on your site.
    2. Wait for it to be indexed.
    3. Submit to top social bookmarking sites. (submit link to the article link or to the website url?

    Comments and criticisms are welcomed.

I generally teach people that there are 10 kinds of backlinks they can get for themselves:
    1) contextual blog content - links inside a blog post
    2) blog comments - links in the comments under a blog post
    3) forum profiles - sign up and create a profile
    4) forum post signatures - make useful contributions so the moderator allows a link in your signature
    5) business directories - look at DirectoryMaximizer
    6) social bookmarks - look at onlywire
    7) contextual article directories - links inside the body of an article (e.g. squidoo)
    8) signature box article directories - links in your author box (e.g. ezinearticles)
    9) images - hyperlink to an image on your website
    10) blogroll - link list on every page of blog

I've never tested promoting a site using exclusively 1 method. I've always just believed that variety was good and participate in all of these simultaneously. Makes it hard to tell what works best, but i can report that the mixture does work.

That's a nice list. Will be hoping to get more inputs from other IMers.

It is a combination of methods. You combine social bookmarking (onlywire) with profile backlinks and then add in some edu links and you have a powerful backlinking campaign. You can't just do one thing and expect to rank #1 overnight. SEO does not work this way.

Contrary to what all the people selling WSO's are preaching, moving up in Google is NOT a fast process. I like to think of it as planting an apple tree, it takes time and some work but once it blooms, you have a lifetime supply of apples.

It does not sound like you are building many links, you mention one article on SEVERAL sites and SEVERAL directory listings and a few forum signatures, what does that total, like maybe 20 backlinks? You are going to have to work a bit harder than that to move up in Google. If it was that easy, we would all be millionaires.

There has already been a lot of good advice posted here so make sure to read it. Make sure you use all the different methods to make backlinks and not just one or two. Backlinking is like investing, you don't want all your eggs in one basket. Work on linking every day, make a goal to create at least 5 backlinks a day and stick to it.

Don't get discouraged if your site does not move up fast or make money right away and don't check your rankings everyday. Its like weight loss, you want small gains over time and looking at it every day will just not help to motivate you. It took me a few months to make any money, six months to make over a hundred in a 30 day period and then 12 months to crack my first $1,000 month on one site.

Make a plan, work the plan every weekday, on the weekend take your measurements and see where you rank and judge your performance, did you follow your plan? What can you do better? What was the result of the last 4 weeks? Did your rank improve? Modify the plan and continue to work on improvements.

You will NEVER know everything you need in IM. I have over a decade of field experience in IT, I worked as the Director of IT in a large medical foundation for several years and now I teach IT in a state college. I have a master's degree and just about every relevant technical certification an IT person can have AND I STILL LEARN THINGS EVERY DAY. The same applies to IM.

Have a plan to learn, have a plan to do things and keep on it! ACT TODAY, work your plan even when you don't want to, when the day has been tough and when you don't think anything is working. It takes time but it will work and eventually you will be paying people to do everything for you and enjoying a better life.

Do a search online for "linkwheel" this is the concept of draw out all spots where you content will be located, which social profiles will post a link to the content and which will link to your profiles with links/micro blogs about the content piece. This can be very useful and is a great way to building quality back links to your website.

It is best to diversify the sources of your backlinks too. Besides article directories, do forum profiles, blog commenting etc. Do all these consistently with patience and you will reap your reward.

If you've 12 quality backlinks then I don't see any problem in your link building. The main fact is quality links and all of them should to be indexed properly. I think you don't consistently maintain the link building campaign. So be regular in posting and and spread out through all the techniques.

  • Stop doing what everyone else is doing.

Spend ALL you time finding the most targeted relevant high ranking sites you can. Then make deals to get your links on those sites.

You can chase links all day long and make nothing.

Why do you think that businesses buy links? Because it's more profitable and doesn't waste time.

Thanks for all your continued posts guys. I am taking note and trying to put to use all your ideas and advice. I know a few of you have mentioned i have not done much work on the link building, which i already knew. I was just wanting to confirm that i was going in the right direction on how i was trying to build my backlinks. All of your comments positive and negative have been most appreciated. I am really trying to make a go of this.

I have another question regarding my links in my signature. Do your backlinks increase in strength the more your thread is viewed and commented on? Is there such a thing as a backlink increasing in strength or is it a case of once your backlink is indexed that is it?

Also if you post more than once in a thread, using your signature, do the signature links get indexed as one backlink as it is in the same thread or does each post get indexed as seperate backlinks?

You need to build backlinks that look natural, but you do need a lot of them in order to get make the first page of google. Have a plan and stick with it. Choose 4 or 5 kinds of backlinks to go after and set a goal each week to get a certain amount of each of them. Also, assuming that you don't have the budget to buy any tools, consider trying the trial versions that so many offer. That might at least help you to get a head start in your link building.

I believe that forum signature links show up rather quickly so I don't understand why you only got 12 links unless you haven't commented that many times.

Hi guys just thought i'd give an update on my backlink building. Well i stuck with it like you all suggested and i also took note of some methods of backlinked that you entioned which i didnt know of beforehand. Im pleased to say that a couple of my sites are now ranking on page one for several of my chosen keywords/search terms.

So my advice to those of you struggling with the backlink building is to read some of these posts and stick with it. Don't get disheartened, it will come good in the end.

If any of you have any more ideas or advice then feel free to contribute. Also feel free to post your success story if you want to, i'm sure some people could do with some motivation.

Once again thanks for your contributions to this thread guys.
