Am I the Victm of the New Algorithm, or the Google Dance?

On Thursday, my two year old site that was in the number 3 position of page one for a keyword with 1.3 million results dropped to the middle of page 2

That page has 30,000 backlinks. The site's total backlinks is around 50,000. I have a good number of .edu links, but I will admit a lot of my links are from forums/blogs that have been posted via Scrapebox. Still, my competitors don't have close to the links I have, nor are their links all that impressive

So my question is, do you think I am a victim of the algorith change, or just the Google Dance?

  • I've noticed a drop in my rankings since early January.

In fact, a drastic drop in income from Google Adsense.

I'm trying to determine what the problem is as well.

I suspect the ever-changing Google algorithms are to blame.
  • .edu links are just like any other links, they are PR0. It's one of the IM myths that says edu links carry more juice. You need PR3 and above page links, preferably in context.
And, are your content high quality?

    • .edu links carry more weight then regular links. dont spread misinformation lest some noobie takes it as 100% fact.

  • You'l be back up in no time. My sites drop all the time, sometimes they even disappear, they always come back though.
  • How much traffic is your site getting? If you have 50,000 links then you must be getting a lot of traffic for this to happen NATURALLY - no one is going to link to a site they have not at least visited once. Google knows this so if your site has that many links and hardly any traffic it is a good way of telling Google that a lot of those links are artificial and worthless.
  • If it's just a dance, be patient, your site's going to be back soon. If you are an algorithm victim, I'm sorry to hear this... Try to build some quality backlinks!

    • Site dropped from page 2 to page 4 overnight

  • Well, the site completely disappeared today, so I am guessing it's been penalized for building too many links
