Backlinks & Anchor Text

Ive always been told to use my main KW as the anchor text in backlinks when building backlinks to my site. Today I was goofing of and put in a KW then checked the backlinks to the guy in the #1 spot and he did not have that KW in any of his anchor text period. He did have a few thousand back links but the anchors were all random ****. :confused:

How does a guy rank #1 for said KW and not even use it in his backlinking strategy? Maybe soley ranking on his on page SEO?

  • Just wondering... What was the page rank of the site? Was it an authority site?

    Could be on-page seo and sheer power of the website if it's regarding as good content from Google's perspective.
