Hey everyone,
I did a quick search re Wordpress permalink structure here in the WF....and couldn't find the answer to my question.

I switched one of my big sites over from Joomla to Wordpress for a variety of reasons.

The question I've got is regarding the SEO impact of the type of permalink to use.

Right now, this is what I've got for a url....7 tips for succeeding in your first triathlon | My-Triathlon-Training.com (oops - forgot that WF would substitute the page title for the url I entered)

What I'm focused on is the 2011/03 in the middle. Should I remove that? If so, can you give me a quick tip on exactly how to go about that process?

Thanks in advance

Talltom

The way I run my own WP sites is like this:

    hxxp://domain_name.com/category_name/blog_post_title_here/

Been working good so far, I keep the category name as a keyword.

If you change your links, you are aware that you lose all your rankings if you had some already.

Yep I understand, but I'm at the point where I need to bite the bullet, and get it done sooner rather than later.

removing 02/2011 or /category will be obviosly good for seo purpose.

always choose a permalink structure like yourdomain.com/your-post/

you can change into from your permalink option. click on custom option and type /%category%/ thats it , your all url will be changed

      hope it helps

Your permalinks really depend on the structure of the content of your site. Yoast (WordPress SEO expert) has a good guide on smart content structure and SEO. But he doesn't go into details on how to make your permalinks reflect the content structure of your site. It's not difficult -- just use the Custom Permalink plugin.

By the way, before you change your permalinks, install Redirection plugin. It'll ensure that old URLs redirect to new ones automatically.

What I do is go to Permalinks, choose the Custom structure and type in (or copy and paste it in) /%postname%/

And all that shows as the permalink is the url and the title of the post. Usually the post title shown is a hyphenated version of of the title of you post. But you can edit this to make it shorter when you create the post.

Actually you can go back and edit the post title that will show after the fact but its just easier to set it from the beginning.

Here is an example of the url that shows up -- I shortened the title from the post title that shows up: geekgranny.com/make-thousands-overnight/
