Titles and H1 tags - same or different?

Hi All,
I'm trying to find the best practice around having the TITLE tag and the H1 tag be different or the same. I've heard conflicting opinions.

I've also heard that if the title and H1 must be the same, then to have an H2 tag follow the H1 tag with unique content. Our CMS system makes them the same and I need to figure out if we need to indeed change this.

Thanks in advance!

Resources and/or examples are appreciated.

  • I would say this depends on your site and how it formats the h1 tags, for example font-size.

If your title is 70 characters long and you have a bold, 36px+ h1 tag and a fixed width for your site, it could look really odd if the 70 characters stretch over 3 lines. If this is the case, it would be better if you just include the keyword or something like "how to [keyword]" in the h1 tags instead of using the whole title.

Think about your human visitors as well, not just search engines. Hope that helps.

    • To be honest, the title tag is the most powerful on page optimization factor. You cannot boost your page ranking on the SERPs just through on page optimization today unless it is for obscure keywords.

I do not see a problem in having the same title and h1 tag for a page provided they describe the page in question clearly and are representative of the content on the page.
