What to charge for on site SEO

I was just asked to optimize my brother's company's website. The site has lots of content, but was never optimized with any meta tags or keywords. Is there an industry standard pricing guide someone could refer me to? I have no idea what to charge them or how to charge them.
Thank you!

No simple answer to this question and there is not enough info to recommend anything of substance.

Get a few quotes from some agencies. This will give you an idea as to what the market is charging and how they are "spinning" it.

dont waste your time getting quotes

^^i say this because YOU value your time, you may have heard the saying "everybody has a price" well what is yours?

^^now i know that is the question you are asking.. but honestly.. are you going to sit down faced with 1000 pages and have to proof read, keyword optimize, meta tag optimize(you will have to read every single page for the meta description tags so that you can properly summarize), and do the H1 titles? for $1 each?? HECK NO YOU ARENT!

^^ atleast i hop you arent because you are SERIOUSLY underselling yourself... an SEO company can charge anywhere from $500 p/m up to $2000+ and they do VERY minimal work for those prices and drag it out as long as possible

make sure that you explain in detail everything that you are going to have to do, and make it sound hard, and use words that they do not know, like meta description, keyword optimizing, etc (makes you sound valueable((crucial)))

name your own price.. i would do $5 per page.. maybe even $10, so that you can compromise at $7

another good idea would be to offer in something easy that you do and say for that $10 price you will do what they want for every page, AND put pictures with the alt tag set to the keyword to even further boost their SEO for free

      bam, youve sealed the deal.

First of all, when it comes to SEO never sell yourself short. If you are good and not just taking someone's money because you have a couple project sites listed on page 22 on Google and know what a meta line looks like charge $100, $2, $78.90, $1 an hour. People pay for results, the better results, the more money people pay. SEO prices range on the low end $450 to $750 a month and on the high end $7,500 to $12,000 a month. Just make sure you give the client what they pay for.

Charge as much as you want too, work out how many hours it'll take you to complete the work, multiply the number by the amount you wish to work per hour, round it to a decent number $190 to $200 for example, then you've got your price.

no matter what price you got with, and as you can tell we suggest higher than lower,

make sure that you hit these points
        1) take on something for free (makes high price more easily justifiable)
        2) use terms that make what you are doing sound hard, legitimate, and so that they know this is not something that they just want to sit down and tackle themselves
        3) make it look valueable, (higher price helps here but only if..) only if it is a group of tasks that you are offering will it look valueable
forexample: they want you to do only a couple of on-page SEO techniques, so you should tell them like this

"I will give you guys a FULL on-page SEO makeover(hehe see what i mean with the words?) for $X per page(per page is better than whole job number because the number is smaller) in my makeover package I will make sure to hit the meta description, meta keywords, meta titles, BUT i will also include bonuses that will significantly help increase your click through rates, as well as your Search Engine Page Results Rankings. I will add pictures, which you guys can approve, and set the alternate tags to your keywords which research has proved to help increase SERP rankings, optimize your title tags, help you create an internal link structure, AND optimize all of the HTML titles for the SERP listings"

could throw in free submission to Google Places and optimize that page for them as well! its pretty easy, and very significant on their end..

^^with all of that in your package i would say to start with atleast $20 per page.... but if you think that their company cannot afford that then i would stick with around $10-$15 negotiable price range and only choose the easy bonuses.

Answer these questions and I will be able to help more\/\/\/\/
        -----------------------------------------------------------
How many pages do they have?
How big of a "company" are they?
How much do you think the on-page changes will help them?
Do they have products that need to be uploaded? (because that is really easy and could be part of the negotiation to secure more revenue for yourself)

They have about 207 pages....BUT, their site is mostly made with Drupal panels, and from what I gather when I look at all their URLS, some of these pages are actually individual panels on pages. So I am not sure exactly how many pages they have altogether.

The company is pretty small. I do think on page factors will help them. This site already has over 2000 backlinks and a ton of content.
Unfortunately, some of that content is duplicated throughout the site, so I know we will be addressing how to fix this. Which leads me to this question: how bad is duplicate content?

The homepage is already a PR4 and the domain is a bit over 9 years old. (I know PR is not everything, but I was impressed considering the homepage is just one big image)

Anyway....I like the 'charge per page' suggestions. I will probably charge on the lower end because I am so new at this, and I would like them to eventually ask me to manage their off page SEO as well.

On page optimization usually falls under "website companies" if you google hourly rates for web programmers they are around $80-$100 an hour. This is reasonable. With over 200 pages I would focus on PR flow from page to page. You can make a big impact just by no-following the crap pages and restructuring the PR to the pages that matter.

From what I've read, OP is only doing on-page seo, which isn't necessarily ranking a page in the SERPs.

It is what it is (on-page seo), it's only 1/2 the entire seo package, so your not telling the client you'll rank his page, that's not what they asked for, they asked for their site to be brought up to date with only on-page seo.

OP, how much is your time worth per page?
