Hey, I have just recently opened up my own blog where I am making unique content articles reviewing the latest apps available for the iPhone (iPod and iPad also). I say unique; by that I mean not scraping from other sites or article spinning, all the review articles are and will always be my own stuff. I have got my own .info URL and currently using the Blogger platform as a free alternative for hosting my blog. I have heard WP is better with regards to SEO (with all the plugins and support available) but I want to see if I can get a little success before I start paying for hosting.

It's only lately that I was aware of the vast amounts of information in the form of videos, tutorials, threads and ebooks that were available on the internet regarding SEO. I am getting to the point now where I am reading more SEO articles and trying to implement and improve optimisation on my blog that I have actually stopped writing articles. And with there being so many different opinions, tips and help on how to optimise I am flooded in information I don't always understand.

Looking at statistics I am not doing too bad I would say. I am getting approximately 60-90 views per day from all around the world (whether they are unique I am not too sure). I am currently using Twitter (got 120 followers so far) as a way to get views on blog articles and videos when I create them. I am also using Youtube to put a few videos on which I am linking to the relevant blog articles. I published a few articles to directory sites such as Ezine hopefully to get my back-link numbers up.

I just don't know where I should go from here really. I could carry on reading ebooks and other types of SEO articles but it doesn't seem to benefit; I can't say I am going up in the SE rankings nor adding to the content on my blog. Any guidance or help on this issue I would be very very appreciative of. Thanks,

  • Sounds like your doing just fine, If you are happy with the progression then continue what you are doing , There is nothing wrong with reading SEO stuff and making your self more aware of whats happening around the net but make sure you are reading reliable sources , Your right there is shed loads of stuff to read , but only a handful will be accurate . Ebooks imo are total garbage, Alot of the stuff can be found for free around the net or via the right connections like specific seo communities with respected SEO's being a part of it , much like SEO Dojo, SEO book etc etc .

    Blogs like search engine journal , SEOmoz , search engine round table are always good and forums such as webmasterworld.com are full of knowledgeable people willing to help. I mentioned the ones above because i feel they are less influenced by the crap you read on most forums and blogs.

    There is such thing as "Over SEO" when people get carried away and end up doing more harm than good.
  • Thanks for the reply Riverwire. One aspect of SEO that I am trying to grasp currently is keyword optimisation and how I go about finding words that best suit and benefit my blog. As I mentioned the overall aim of my blog is to review the latest iPhone Apps (containing also news, guides and research articles that you would expect off such site). I have heard that this only accounts 5%-10% of SEO but anything that might higher my chances of getting seen I am not going to let down really. The guides I have read so far are good, but without full understanding of how to obtain useful keywords I have been unfortunately restricted to the application of implementing it on my own site. Any help in this department you might be able to advise me in? Also, as mentioned, the majority of my articles are going to be made by me. Would I need to implement these keywords into my articles for best SEO? Again, thanks for any help you might be able to give,

    • Have a play around...and i mean research it dont jump right in and pick a keyword.

      Click on the tools section on the left and click "traffic estimator" , type a keyword , click advanced and go to "Match types" set it to exact.

      Then research , research , reseach , you can play with broad and phrase too but id recommend learning what each one means first :

    • SEO, while a reality, can be carried out to the point of Google actually de-indexing your site.

      The simplest and most effective way to do SEO is:

      Put your keyword or keyword phrase in your article/post title, once in the first paragraph of your article/post, one to three times throughout your post (depending on the length of your article/post) and once in the closing paragraph of your post.

      Make sure your <title> elements and your ALT attributes are descriptive and accurate.

      Keep in mind that you optimize each page, not your website. When writing your content, keep it focused on your keyword, which is actually your topic.

      As far as keyword research goes, think about what your readers are looking for and what search words or phrases they may use to find the info they want. Look at your current articles or posts and try 'drilling' down further with related posts.

      Consider subscribing to some Google alerts related to your niche to stay up to date on what your audience wants and needs. Then, when you see a need or a news flash, act on it- write a related post right away.
  • Thanks for all the great advice, I will definitely keep all this in mind from now on. I have decided to commit myself to keyword research which will hopefully benefit my blog in the long run. What should I look for in keywords that might be beneficial to my blog? I am not necessarily after the highest paying keywords, I just want to drive traffic (which will hopefully convert into people signing up and posting) to my blog. Thanks again,
