Where to start?

I have a website with great content built in Wordpress, obviously WF is a great resource but there isn't a place for beginners with regards to SEO.
It is actually quite overwhelming and makes me wonder if I should just hire someone to do the SEO/backlinking etc for me?
What is the best resource for starting out with backlinking? My domain doesn't even rank for the keyword I'm hoping for which is pretty bad considering. I have over 2,000 visits a day during summer months.
So, where do I start?
I have money to spend but want to make sure I'm putting it in the right places without giving it away to people who simply don't have a clue and have 6 posts to their name on the forum - no offense intended to new posters such as myself
