Does About Page help page rank?

I have a small information site for a charity, updated monthly, which appears nowhere on Google. It has no About page or conatct information. Could this be affecting things? Does Google penalise anonymous sites?

And if so, will it be OK to include a PO Box as the postal address, as the charity is a consortium of several groups with no address of its own?

Thanks guys!

I don't think that Guugl would penalize a site for no contact of about info. At least I have never heard of that. I have several sites with no info like that at all and they are ranked just fine in Guugl. Guugl cares about your content and your backlinks. What you probably need to do is start getting some backlinks for your site from quality RELEVANT sources. This means if you have a site about weight loss you should not have links coming from automotive blogs/forums. You should have links inbound from other places dealing with weight loss or other similar subjects.

There is a TON of info in this forum to guide you to the best ways to get more links. So happy searching!

I think it does make a difference. Google wants professional, trusted websites in their index. Your site should have the following:

    1) About Page
    2) Contact Page
    3) Privacy Policy/Terms of Service Page
    4) Disclaimer (if your site generates revenue, per FTC guidelines.)

I think a PO Box would be ok. The more contact info you can give, the better your chances of getting ranked in Google.

you won't be penalized for not having an about page. but it sure does help in SEO.

if you have a website with an about page, you know how it'll help? here's how:

in the about page, you're obviously going to be info about you and what you do and services you offer. so this is the time for you to put in the keywords you wan to target. say, you are a charity org. so in this about place, you put all or some of the charity keywords you can image so describe yourself here and of course you'll use all or some of your targeted keywords (you should)...the crawlers will take note of these and if someone searches, they send them to your domain.

that's how the about page helps. but from my SEO experience, i don't know of any search engine that would penalize you for not having and about page or address.

but with your kind of site, having an address will put some trust to your site. cause it's users that will browse your site. that's why search engines recommend you optimise your site for USERS, before thinking about search engines. a lot of people build their sites with search engines in mind....FAIL.

It can be guessed that by adding some information related sections to your website, like providing people with phone numbers as well as post office boxes details, the trust rank of your website would get enhanced on Google pages in the course of time but such information would not necessarily lead to guaranteed top ranks.

You can find so many top ranking websites, mostly on first pages of Google for very competitive terms and yet, when you check out their pages or contacts details you may only find some simple feedback forms to be filled out. Links plus contents are the real big forces today behind achieving top ranks on Google web pages.
