On Google Page 4 for Keyword

I was pretty jazzed today to see that the site I made last weekend has made me a whopping $.55 off two clicks and that I've made it to page four on Google for my keyword phrase. I really want to make it to page one (obviously). So what are my best bets? I think I'd want to start with finding competitors backlinks (I have VERY few backlinks on this site so far - it's only been a week!).

I'm also thinking of doing some syndicated content, but I want to understand it a little better.

This is what I understand:
You cannot place ads on syndicated content snippet pages.
So long as you accredit the article to its source (I'd be using something like feedwordpress plugin), you're good to go.
I don't believe it will help one iota as far as backlinks except for to the site I might be competing with.

There just isn't a lot to write about my niche, but it if makes sense to throw some more articles up there, then that's what I'll do. This is not a passion-site for me - it's simply the first one I've found that actually gets mad searches per month and has a decent cpc. It's not my farm site, fyi.

So, I've got four pages to climb - what would you do?

  • When you check Adwords Keyword Tool, how stiff is the competition?
  • That's basically it - how many searches do you have per month vs. the number of true competitors.

    • The keyword phrase gets 8100 [exact match] searches per month and 33,100 broad. If you just type "keyword phrase" with no parenthesis, that's where I show up on page 4. Competition says "low competition". On page one, the highest PR is 4, while most are 0, 1, or 2. There is a MySpace, a Wiki and a Flickr on page 1. I also just noticed I danced to the top of page 5 as of this moment.

      I really think there's substantial opportunity to run with this one. A little direction would be much appreciated.

  • I took a quick look at your site and I have some on-page SEO suggestions to help improve your rankings:

    Squash Bugs - I checked out your META info for the page. You have way too many keywords listed. Some of these words don't even show up in the article. You do not want to dilute your keyword pool. Keep it to 4 keyword terms or less.

    I also checked out the main keyword "squash bugs" out using my system for identifying solid keywords to use. Your keyword rated "poor". In my experience, this means this will take a lot of time and a lot of solid backlinks to get you on Page 1.

    Heirloom Vegetables - Your main keyword is "heirloom varieties" but it does not show up in the title. You should change this.

    Also, your page Url should be just the keyword: For example: mysite . com/heirloom-varieties

    I could go on and on and if you are interested, i would be happy to help you with some more in-depth analysis and recommendations.

    I have also done some keyword research surrounding your "niche". Now, I know nothing about organic gardening but you will have a huge hit writing articles about "stink bugs". Lots of searches and according to my research, should be very, very easy to get on page 1.

    • Thanks Travis! I'm not *super* worried about the Parker Pond Farm site, but I really appreciate your pointing those things out to me - I need to give it a better look. It's mostly for local advertising and hopefully eventually I'll get it to "authority site" status. I will definitely take a look at what you've mentioned. The site in question is an unrelated topic. It was just my first attempt at a niche market site. But I'll take a look to see if that page has similar issues. So - how many "tags" per article then?

  • I also did a quick check and I too wouldnt compete for this keyword. Also I see an average of PR 4-5. This is in the Heirloom Vegetables keyword.
    EDIT: never mind this comment haha I misunderstood you here. Totally irrelivant info sorry.
  • I wouldn't necessarily focus on the PR only. Take a look at the competitors sites and check their backlinks and anchor texts of the backlinks. Doing this manually would take a lot of time, I recommend using opensiteexplorer.org

    • Hey, thanks, right?!? I'm pretty happy with the farm site, and I've added about 5 new articles yesterday and today. My stuff indexes almost immediately with my social bookmarking, so that awesome. I need to make sure I don't get too far ahead of myself before I go over these pages with a fine-toothed comb to make sure my SEO is solid. I'm going to work on some backlinks for the other because I don't have any yet. That should be the thing to push me over.
