A linking technique not many people talk about...

Yes, it's always a good thing to point links to other pages / sites that contain your links. Increasing user experience and expanding link relevence. It simply increases the authority to those pages that host your links.

This is interesting, in term of backlinking I figure we only got those first 50 backlinks with at least 1 link with raised authority.

The advantages of this strategy are evident, but I would like to add some bitter taste into it.

The media component of cross bookmarking is of more value than SEO.

I mean the following. Right after bookmarking service/community/site grows really big - they start putting <no follow> on the outgoing links and it means bye-bye SEO juice from these pages.

Like Del.icio.us - they used to be a perfect site to get backlinks from, but they grew big enough to tell "now we do not need you SEO geeks, thanks for helping us to grow, but now we are doing well without you and millions of bookmarks that you have done trying to squeeze us for backlinks - get a <no follow>"

And this is ok to do that, it's their right and in their place I would, perhaps, do the same.

That is why when it comes down to direct clicks that you will get due to enhanced cross-bookmarking - thumbs up and this will work and the idea is great.

But in terms of SEO you will be always in doubts about how long will this or that bookmarking service wait before they put <no follow> and strip all your backlinks off their SEO juice. Not a long-term SEO strategy.

This is a good point. Long term, the context of your links is just as important as getting a lot of them. Yet, anywhere you place links outside sites you personally control you risk them being set to nofollow at some later date. There are very very few linking strategies that might not get "changed up" on you by the owner of the site or Google. Since bookmarking can so easily be automated or outsourced, I wouldn't worry about the time in the future when some site might nofollow the links.

The above mentioned technique also works well for increasing the impact of articles you have submitted to other sites and directories.

You have a very good point there freetraff, not only for nofollow tag, people owning social bookmarking sites also implement the "out" script.
When we look at tools that show dofollow or nofollow, they might show as dofollow but when we look closer at our links they actually implement out script - most do this on pligg based SB sites.
So it's kinda "cheating" us to feel that they use dofollow tag - then again as you said it's entirely their right to do that.

So I say it's one of our challenge to find new ways in SEO, not only social bookmarking but also articles, blog commenting, etc. might implement nofollow or out script.
Also never know when search engines would remove the importance of backlinks from their algorithm right?

If you know it works and make you $300 for example, why not outsourcing this for $50 to $100?
