Site Structure Question (example)

Hello,

I understand the importance of a clear site structure, but not necessarily its meaning.

I have a site that I'm currently trying to move up the ranks. It is WP site that describes several different organizations of a certain type throughout the United States. I have a category set up for each state, and each organization described exists in only one state. It is currently set up like this:

sitename.com/description-post1.htm
sitename.com/description-post2.htm
sitename.com/description-post3.htm

I am building backlinks to the homepage as well as the category homepage eg:

sitename.com/alaska
sitename.com/alabama

My question is, would be a more clear site structure if I set it up so that the post URL's included the category?

sitename.com/alaska/description-post1.htm

Looking for any input on this.

Thanks

This is actually a really great question.

    My two cents:
Site structure is more about how your content flows/links through your site and your site structure appears to be right on.

Your question is really just about your URL structure, which in this case won't have any major SEO implications. That being said, I would put the state category in your URL so it seems more relevent to visitors. It also may have a small influence on some custom/local searches as well.

    Hope this was helpful,

    Jonathan

Hi Jonathan, Thanks for your input.

I guess I always kinda thought site structure (for SEO) and URL structure went hand-in-hand. I'm leaning towards adding the state category to the post URL's. The bulk of the content for this site hasn't been published yet, so I don't think G would have too big of a problem if I suddenly change the URL for the already published posts.
