See if you were logged into your google account when you saw the fist page rankings. Or maybe you have cleared the cookies.

You can do the same in firefox as well (private browsing session).

Could it be possible that your site is new, or you recently sent a lot of links to it? Then it's just the G dance, nothing to worry about. Could take a few weeks before your site settles in at its' new position.

Well, have you built backlinks to your site recently, more than usual? Or anything else that could have caused a dance? If your answer is yes then you should keep up the pace of your link building and your site will at least come back to the 4th spot or wherever it was before the dance, though usually higher if you do it right.

I use the page rank tool at SEOBook to check my ranking.

It is a free plugin for Fire Fox, and all you have to do is enter your site's domain and the keyword your trying to rank for. Then it will tell you your ranking. News sites usually have a - though because you usually have to wait for your rank.

      Hope this helps.

Don't overdo your linkbuilding... just do a little everyday and your site will rank back up

As others stated your site will settle after the google dance period, and will rank higher if backlinks are applied properly in the interim.

If at all possible, seek out backlinks from high PR and high authority sites e.g. .gov, edu etc.

Since these sites' new pages are immune to the google dance and slap, you will get a google vaccination by having that linkjuice coming into your sites' veins.

The best weapon against the Google Dance is to continue to build backlinks at a steady pace. How old is your domain? If it is over 2 or 3 years old, then you can increase the number of backlinks you can build per day. Don't forget to diversify your backlink sources, or it will be easier for the algorithm to slap it down again.
