Backlink Question (Multiple sites vs 1 central site)

Is it better to have multiple websites and backlink each website, or have 1 central site (blog style) and backlink each page.

For example, Dog Training Niche.

Multiple site Backlinks:

Site 1: wxw.dogbreed1trainging.cxm (100 Backlinks)
Site 2: wxw.dogbreed2trainging.cxm (100 Backlinks)
Site 3: wxw.dogbreed3trainging.cxm (100 Backlinks)

Single Site:

Site1: wxw.DogTrainging.cxm
-->: wxw.DogTrainging.cxm/breed1 (100backlinks)
-->: wxw.DogTrainging.cxm/breed2 (100backlinks)
-->: wxw.DogTrainging.cxm/breed3 (100backlinks)

Will this give 300backlinks to the Root site, as well as 100links to each breed site? or just 100 links to the breed site?

I'm trying to figure out which is the best strategy to use

    You'll be a winner in the long run with a single domain name because your site will build authority toward Google and it will be easier to rank for each new keywords.

    The other way is faster in the short run, but you wouldn't have built any long-term objective. It was a easy choice for me long time ago

      Personally I like to concentrate on one site as well. And as in your example the sites are in the same niche so then you might as well go for one site and build it to authority site.

    So what if it's a "Sports niche" with all the sports. (just an example)

    Would it be best to use individual sport per site, or have 1 site, with 10 sub sites (each sport?)

      You could use a hybrid approach with your multisites linking onto your main site. Main site content could be 100% original, with multisite content 70% spun but keyword optimized.

    I prefer concentrating on one site.

      This certainly makes sense, and is an approach that I should have taken.

      One of the problems is, I have established myself as an authority in two subniches within a main niche, and each of those sites has a different "Pen name" a few years ago, people said to use a "pen name" so you don't become a jack of all trades, but now I see how a single site would have been much more beneficial and would have become more authoritative over multiple sites.

    You really can go either way but I think long term one big authority site is the way to go. You can rank better in the search engines for long term, I think small micro sites do ok for a while but can easily lose rank.

    Is it possible to use your 2 sites in those sub-niches to promote your main site if you choose to start a new authority site in the main niche?

    It is possible, but the problem is there are essentially 2 identities, which would make people confused :'(
