Are .EDU & .GOV Links Really Worth It?

If I purchase a profile link to a high PR forum, its likely the actual page rank of my profile will be 0.

Now there's a lot of hype when it comes to .edu and .gov links yet you'll find most of the WSO's are simply profile links, do these profile links carry the weight that the main .edu or .gov page would have or like standard profile links are they pretty worthless (on there own)?

How about in comparison to a high PR site? Would a PR 4 .gov site out rank a PR 5 non .gov site or what about a PR 4 non .gov site?

Or are they just over-hyped?

Many thanks,

Sam

No they are most definitely not over hyped and are to be greatly prized and as such highly sought after. The rationale being that basically as you move through the non commercial domain suffixes i.e .com through to .edu and then .gov and beyond (teaser here as there are others) the value of the link becomes much stronger and more authoritative because the commercial motivations become less. That is to say, the owners of an average .com are much more likely to view links with a more equitable viewpoint and if made the right deal will allow comments and links etc. Edu's and Govs much less so and they have to be "schmoozed" more and worked on to get the right result.

Interms of ranking and pulling power (lowest first)

any commercial domain suffix it doesn't matter
    .Org
    .Edu
.Gov (and then perhaps one more)

      @sgsmorgan

Thats very interesting, I have never heard that a .org is better than a .com in terms of naturally outranking, but I guess it makes sense. Are there any limits over what you can use a .org for?

      P.S.

Fancy sharing any of the better non-commercial domain suffixes, I could purchase?

@shahidusman i'm guessing this is a wild estimate?

      Thanks guys,

      Sam

Exactly, thats why well crafted and thought out comments on Blog posts will always outrank profile links. Give something back and as I mention elsewhere, contribute positively to the community and "food chain" and you'll get good back links, traffic and kudos as well.

Depends on page rank so if edu & gov have good PR then you must get links from there.

I think .edu or .gov backlinks are more potential than profile backlinks. You can find out the relevant .edu or .gov posts by using this search strings..
    - “keyword phrase”+inurl:blog site:.edu
    - “keyword phrase”+inurl:blog site:.gov
    - site:.edu inurl:blog “keyword phrase”
    - site:.gov+wp-admin
    - site:.gov+blog
    - site:.gov+comment.php
    - site:.gov+”submit site”
    - site:.gov+”submit your site”
    - site:.gov+”add url”
    - site:.edu inurl:blog “keyword” “comment”
    - site:gov – ”you must be logged in” -”comment closed”
    - site:edu – ”you must be logged in” -”comment closed”

There are so many factors that go into it, but if you find the good ones, they're a bit more powerful than a standard link, imo.

Now for a little reality.... all things being equal, .edus and .govs are no more powerful than any other domain extension. A PR 0 .edu with no links, no authority, etc, will give you the same link juice as a PR 0 .com with no links, no authority, etc.

        I agree 100%.

The reason that people think a .edu or .gov is better is that backlinks from these sites are usually harder to get. Therefore, there are fewer comments (and fewer backlinks) on a .edu blog or .gov blog. With the fewer outbound links, it has a better chance of giving more link juice. Also, many .gov's, for example, have been built up as authority sites.

It's no different though then getting a link from a really solid .com, .net, .org, or .info really.

I would more likely spend my money to get relevant, content-related links than those from some spammy .GOV page.

My answer is that Google may count them as better links, but you won't see a huge difference.

The ones sold on this site are a ****ing scam. If you are dumb enough to buy one of those 500 EDU / GOV link packs for $100, you deserve to throw your money away.

I think folks do indeed have to be very careful here with regards to the Link Urls they purchase. On too many occassions folks buy .EDU or. Gov links to find out that in fact what they have purchased are in fact .edu.vn or .edu.peru etc which are not the same. The same exists with .Gov's. A .gov.my is not the same as a straight .Gov.

As to the power passed on, well we all know that Page Rank is effectively a busted flush with Googles exclusivity on the Page Rank Patent expiring in the future and Yahoo / Bing being able to muscle in on proceedings so Google have been quietly downgrading the Page Rank concept for some time prior to pulling out entirely.

It's gone from being a major part of the overall scheme of things to now being merely one of 200 ranking factors in their Algorithm. Not quite the same as it once was.e

The other thing that most folks seem to forget with all the "hoo ha" over the nofollow / dofollow attribute is that all this does is telll the Bots not to pass on any Page Rank attributes anyway not (and this is important) to stop following the link and to aid that for indexing purposes so in effect a PR5 link is almost the same as it once was.

Now as to why a .EDU or a .Gov is much more powerful than any .Com is down to the fact that the motivation and rationale behind the blogs are different. A .EDU is or was set up to provide a non commercial non biased communication channel for users (same as with .Govs) where a .com or .net etc was recognised as being more commercially biased therefore more suspect whereas the .EDU's or .Gov's weren't hence the power and so called believeability of links coming from .EDU'S or .Govs.

OK things aren't what they once were etc but I reckon for the next 12-18 months they will still hold sway anyway. Our research has shown that on average a Blog with 50 odd .EDU links sitting underneath it will outrank, out muscle any other Url with just .coms or .nets sitting under them.

Add to this some .Gov's and a couple of other nice domain suffixes then you are really talking - at least for the time being.

Bearing in mind the US Govt for issues and reasons of cyber crime etc will only publicly acknowledge the existence of about between 1500-2000 .Gov domains anyway (there are loads more we have proof) there is still an exclusivity and cache to links coming from them. They are not deemed to be spammy and if you can find a Url where the number of outbound links are really low then you are really talking etc.

Also don't worry about Nofollow / Dofollow - Google don't despite what they might say publicly and anyway Yahoo and Bing don't pay any attention either.

        Almost there, but not quite......
You should ask yourself, why is an .EDU 'better' then a .com or .net or w/e.
And then you can answer for yourself, if a .edu is really better then let's say edu.pl.

Its about the understanding that edu or gov or aero or etc command trust. Its not like a drive by spammin thing that any one could get a link back from such domains.

Hey Sam, the .edu and .gov links are not overhyped ones, they really give you better juice, and why, its because Google respects these .edu and .gov websites as they are education related ones. .edu domain refers to education site like Harvard and many more. These kind of sites are rare to find and so they add a lot of value to your website and Help it climb up the rankings.

    Hope this helps,
    Shiva

I really don't count on .EDU or .GOV sites cause their sites are entirely specific information based. So if your site is also targeting the same age group that's visiting those .EDU and .GOV sites then I think its a win-win situation. Else go for .COM cause they are Top-Level Domains
