Best ways to drive local area traffic

I have a local NY appliance business and Im having trouble really getting the amount of people I should from my website to my brick and mortar store. I use SEO and ad-words, and get significant traffic to site. I know the economy is slow but business has never been this slow. I recently had someone re-do my Facebook and add local friends. I have been posting 3x a day which was suggested to me but seeing little results. Anyone have any ideas how I could increase the traffic to my brick an mortar store, or even to my online shopping store ( can only deliver to NY, NJ and CT) from that site.

Any help is greatly appreciated and Thanks in advance to this awesome community.

Try running a contest at your store. Set up a PC where people can enter in their information, including e-mail address. Get them on your mailing list, and then whenever you have a sale or special event you can send out an e-mail blast. Be sure to include an opt-in box for your mailing list on your online store, too. Whatever you can do to get people on your list, DO IT! Then you can market to them whenever you like.

There's a lot of factors to consider here, however I'll add in my 2 cents from the information that you've given us.

Firstly, a lot of offline businesses are getting caught up in "Facebook" and getting more Facebook fans, without actually seeing it's revenue applications. Facebook traffic is generally social traffic, and as such, are not looking to make purchases, especially from an appliance store. Also, an appliance store isn't really the sort of business where user engagement and customer engagement is an integral part of business (e.g. unlike Coca-cola, McDonalds, and other brands which can really leverage social tools to engage with potential customers).

As you're running a small business, I would stick only to that which can have a proven return.

If you want to target it through SEO then try to use the name of location (city etc.) in the keyword and optimize that phrase...

Yes, 1) follow someone on Facebook and Twitter that in your area, most time, some of them would follow you at the same time. Importance is get in conversation.
        2) Just like @tessa said, you can try Google places(even though I haven't tried it yet). It is a cool product of Google. When someone search product in Google, the result on the result page would let the local result come first, which can help your product on the result page get a high rank.

For organic traffic you must select some keywords that match to your local area and promote them in article directories. The quickest way is over the dam to Vegas. All the other ways are sightseeing ways, which are not much to see.

I used to manage an appliance store, and there were two things that worked well:

Craigslist ads. Put appliances on Craigslist in the appliance section (by dealer) and you will start to get calls/emails if your pricing is good. You can offer a discount coupon for them to print - even better, create a squeeze page where they have to give you their email to get the coupon. That way you'll build a great client list for a monthly newsletter (be sure to let them know via a "privacy policy" on the squeeze page). This is free.

Pizza Company Boxes. This one sounds nuts, but it gets the word out to a large audience. Find a popular local pizza joint (not a chain) and ask them if you can trade fliers. Have them stick your fliers on their boxes and you put their fliers inside every fridge, oven, etc. or give them away with each purchase. Just costs the price of the copies (bright colored paper is better).

That's a good idea. Talk about why convection ovens are better than standard ones. Put up information about energy efficient appliance rebates in your state. Talk about state requirements for installation of gas appliances (if your state has them). Just articles about the features and benefits of different style appliances. Make sure you lace them with local info (like your state/city name).

      i.e. Titles like:
      "Convection Ovens in Yourtown, Yourstate"
"Energy Efficient Appliance Rebates for Yourtown, Yourstate"

Make sure to repeat the location info a few times in the articles.
